Help a Buddy Fund Grant Application Eligibility (2026)

Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Animal rescue groups
  • Animal welfare groups
  • Registered charity non-profit organizations in Alberta

Who is not eligible

  • Individuals
  • For-profit businesses

Eligible expenses

  • Routine animal care, including food, bedding, veterinary care, spay/neuter, grooming, and microchipping
  • Emergency veterinary procedures or surgery for foster animals
  • Related veterinary costs that directly support animals in long-term care

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Operational and administrative costs
  • Infrastructure and shelter design, build, or upkeep
  • Veterinary treatment for known conditions when the care could have been delayed beyond 30 days

  • Highest need
  • Eligibility and completeness of the application
  • Board review followed by AGM voting

How to apply

  • Step 1: Review the program rules
    • Confirm that your organization and project meet the published eligibility requirements.
    • Choose the appropriate grant stream.
  • Step 2: Complete the application form
    • Fill out the appropriate online application for the selected grant stream.
    • Prepare all required supporting information and attachments.
  • Step 3: Submit by the deadline
    • Send the completed application by March 31, 2026 at 11:59 pm.
    • Ensure the application is complete before submission.
  • Step 4: Await review and decision
    • Applications are reviewed by the Board of Directors and may go to voting at the Annual General Meeting in April.
    • Applicants are notified by email of the decision.

  • Selected applications are put forward for voting at the Annual General Meeting in April
  • Applicants are notified by email if they do not qualify
  • Awarded recipients are contacted by email and/or phone after the AGM
  • Approved groups must complete final reporting or a face-to-face follow-up meeting

Additional information

  • Only one application may be submitted per applicant.
  • Applicants who received funding in the previous year are not considered.
  • Approved groups must allow Help a Buddy Fund to highlight grant use on social media and in its e-newsletter.
  • Recipients must take part in a post-award follow-up, either a meeting or final reporting.
