Overview
The Green Heating program offers financial assistance to replace a central heating system powered by oil or propane with a system operating on electricity or another renewable energy source. This support aims to encourage the energy-efficient conversion of Quebec homes and covers the dismantling and installation work required.
Financing terms and conditions
- Financial assistance amounts for converting a central oil heating system: $1,275 for detached homes; $875 for semi-detached or row homes; $1,075 for mobile homes; $875 per eligible unit for duplexes or triplexes; $550 per eligible unit for multi-unit residential buildings.
- Financial assistance amounts for converting a central propane heating system: $850 for detached homes; $650 for semi-detached or row homes; $600 for mobile homes; $650 per eligible unit for duplexes or triplexes; $225 per eligible unit for multi-unit residential buildings.
- Financial assistance for converting a light oil water heater: $250 for detached homes; $250 per eligible unit or per water heater installed in duplexes, triplexes, or multi-unit buildings.
- Financial assistance for converting a propane water heater: $200 for detached homes; $200 per eligible unit or per water heater installed in duplexes, triplexes, or multi-unit buildings.
- The total amount of combined subsidies (including those from other programs) must not exceed 80% of eligible expenses for the project.
Activities funded
- Conversion of central heating systems from oil or propane to electricity or other renewable energies.
- Complete removal of oil or propane tanks and dismantling of existing fuel heating appliances.
- Installation of new heating systems powered by renewable energy sources (such as electric boilers, heat pumps, biomass, geothermal, wind, or solar energy).
- Conversion of oil or propane water heaters to systems powered by electricity or renewable energies, carried out simultaneously with central heating system conversion.

Eligibility
- The applicant must be the owner of the residential building where the conversion work is carried out. Eligible applicants include individuals, companies, co-ownership syndicates, band councils, estates, trusts, or an authorized representative.
- The building must be a single-family home, duplex, triplex, or a small multi-unit residential building with no more than three storeys and a total projected floor area not exceeding 600 m².
- The building must be habitable year-round, located in Québec, and connected to Hydro-Québec’s main grid, a municipal, or cooperative electricity network (not off-grid systems).

- Owners of single-family residential homes
- Owners of duplexes
- Owners of triplexes
- Owners of small multi-unit residential buildings (maximum 3 storeys, up to 600 m² floor area)
- Companies or organizations that own eligible residential buildings
Who is not eligible
- Commercial or industrial companies (unless part of a mixed-use building, which must apply under a different program).
- Owners of buildings with more than three storeys or a projected floor area exceeding 600 m².
- Businesses with properties located in municipalities supplied by off-grid electricity systems.
- Companies owning commercial or mixed-use buildings (eligible only under the ÉcoPerformance program, not Chauffez vert).
Eligible expenses
- Purchase and installation costs of a new heating system powered by electricity or renewable energy sources, including heat pumps and electric boilers.
- Complete removal and dismantling of the existing oil or propane central heating system and associated tanks.
- Purchase and installation costs of a new water heater powered by electricity or renewable energy, if it is converted simultaneously with the main heating system.
- Contractor services for the dismantling, removal, and installation work (must be performed by contractors holding the appropriate RBQ license).

How to apply

Verify eligibility requirements
- Review the eligibility criteria for homes and owners (e.g., type of building, energy supply, ownership status)
- Assess if your building and planned work meet the requirements before proceeding

Complete eligible conversion work
- Remove the oil or propane heating system and fuel tank as required
- Install a new heating system powered by electricity or renewable energies
- If applicable, convert the water heater at the same time
- Ensure all work is performed by a contractor licensed by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ)

Prepare supporting documents
- Collect the necessary supporting documents (proof of ownership, electricity bill, last fuel bill, invoices for new system and contractor’s RBQ number, etc.)
- Ensure documents are scanned or photographed in full and are legible in digital format

Submit the online application
- Fill out the Chauffez vert financial assistance online application form
- Upload all required supporting documents during the submission process
- Submit the application before March 31, 2026
- Retain the confirmation email and your Chauffez vert file number

Respond to information requests
- Follow up for any missing or additional information requested by program administrators
- Transmit your Social Insurance Number as instructed for payment processing

Receive financial assistance payment
- Upon approval, you will receive the financial assistance payment by cheque within 4 to 6 weeks after file completion
- The work may be subject to audit for up to 12 months following payment
Additional information
- The application form for financial assistance is available only online.
- Supporting documents must be submitted electronically, and the maximum allowed per field is five files or photos.
- If you do not receive an automated confirmation and file number after application submission, you should contact customer service immediately.
- Financial assistance received for personal use is not taxable and does not need to be declared on your income tax return.
