Eligibility

Eligible expenses

  • Gas, naphtha, propane, and food supplies.
  • Equipment rental, transportation and accommodation, camping gear and clothing.
  • Freezers and generators for cabins, safety equipment such as satellite phones and life vests, and materials to build or repair cabins.
  • Honoraria for knowledge keepers, guides, helpers, cooks, or labour for cabin construction.
  • Food processing equipment, kitchen appliances, materials to build or retrofit kitchens or greenhouses, shipping costs for materials and equipment, short-term maintenance linked directly to the project, and additional items to be agreed upon.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Salaries and wages for harvesters.
  • Alcohol and cigarettes.
  • Additional funding under the local Hunter Support Program to purchase meat, fish, or seafood.
  • Personal equipment or infrastructure, research-only equipment, large capital construction projects, and vehicles for private use.
  • Junk food, candies, and pop should be limited or avoided.

How to apply

  • Fill out an application form any time during the year.

Processing and Agreement

  • Most applications are processed within 3–4 weeks.
  • Additional information may be requested from the applicant.
  • Makivvik executives make the final decisions on project approvals.
  • Upon approval, the organization will sign a funding agreement with Makivvik.
  • After completion, a report and financial summary must be submitted.

Additional information

  • The program is a federal program created in 2019 at the request of Inuit.
  • Makivvik’s Department of Environment, Wildlife, and Research manages the funds.
  • New project ideas that fit the grant criteria are strongly encouraged, especially projects that support youths or families with limited financial resources to participate in harvesting.
  • For projects over 500K, proponents must contact the program coordinator to evaluate eligibility and funding options.
