Essential Medicines eligibility and application steps updated
GreenShield’s Essential Medicines page now explicitly requires applicants in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Alberta, and British Columbia to be Canadian citizens or permanent residents who reside in the province. The application instructions were also simplified: the page now points applicants to online application links and no longer references fax submission or sending applications by email.

Who is eligible?
- Eligible youth aged 15 to 29 in Canada, including low-income, racialized, and 2SLGBTQI+ youth, can access Youth Mental Health.
- Women 18+ in Canada who identify as women, non-binary, or gender non-conforming can access Women’s Mental Health.
- Canadian citizens or permanent residents who reside in Ontario, are currently employed, are aged 25 to 64, have a household net income below the program threshold, and are not enrolled in a private or employee prescription drug plan or a provincial drug program can apply for Essential Medicines.
- Canadian citizens or permanent residents who reside in Nova Scotia or Alberta, are currently employed, are aged 18 to 64, have a household net income below the program threshold, and are not enrolled in a private or employee prescription drug plan or a provincial drug program can apply for Essential Medicines.
- Canadian citizens or permanent residents who reside in British Columbia, are currently employed, are aged 19+, have a combined household net income below the program threshold, are not enrolled in a private prescription drug plan, are enrolled in BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) and have a BC Services card, and are registered for BC PharmaCare can apply for Essential Medicines.
Who is not eligible
- Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Alberta applicants enrolled in a private or employee prescription drug plan are not eligible for Essential Medicines.
- Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Alberta applicants enrolled in or currently participating in a provincial drug program are not eligible for Essential Medicines.
- British Columbia applicants who are not enrolled in BC Medical Service Plan (MSP) and Fair PharmaCare are not eligible for Essential Medicines.
- British Columbia applicants enrolled in a private prescription drug plan are not eligible for Essential Medicines.

How to apply
- Select your province to begin the Essential Medicines application process.
- Use the relevant provincial application link, or download the application for Ontario, Nova Scotia or Alberta and email the completed form to essentialmedicines@greenshield.ca.
- For Youth Mental Health, select Through an employer or organization.
- Choose I have an organization code and enter YMH2.
- For Women’s Mental Health, select Through an employer or organization.
- Choose I have an organization code and enter WELLBEING.
Processing and Agreement
- Once an application is processed, the member receives notification via email or Canada post, depending on their preference and consent.
- If approved, the member receives a fact sheet and an approval letter that outline the plan member identification number and the program start and end date.
- Coverage is effective within 5 business days of approval.
- Participants are advised to share their participation in the program and their approval package with providers.
- Medications are dispensed exclusively by GreenShield Pharmacy, and participants must share GreenShield Pharmacy information with prescribers so prescriptions are sent to the right place.
