Overview

The Greening Partnership Grant provides up to $100,000 to support projects that increase tree canopy cover on private land in Toronto. Eligible activities include planting and maintaining non-invasive trees and shrubs, as well as community education and engagement in tree stewardship.

Financing terms and conditions

  • Funding requests must range between $5,000 and $100,000 per project.
  • Projects must provide a 50% matching contribution (cash and/or in-kind) equivalent to the grant amount.
  • Requests for grants over $50,000 require prior consultation with Urban Forestry regarding scope and eligibility.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be an incorporated not-for-profit corporation without share capital, a charitable organization, or a foundation registered as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency.
  • The project must focus on increasing canopy cover through planting and stewardship of non-invasive trees and shrubs on private land in the City of Toronto.
  • Only direct, reasonable, and necessary costs to run or deliver the project are eligible.
  • The applicant must be able to provide a 50% match in funding (cash and/or in-kind contributions).

  • For-profit businesses or ventures.
  • Individuals.
  • Grant-making or third-party fundraising organizations.
  • Political or lobby groups.
  • Landlord/tenant and condominium corporations.

Eligible expenses

  • Direct costs that are reasonable and necessary to run or deliver the approved project.
  • Overhead and administrative costs up to 15% of the requested amount.
  • Internal or external salaries and people-related costs up to 50% of the requested amount (includes web design, graphic design, writing, translation, and labour).

  • Projects taking place within the City of Toronto.

Selection criteria

  • Alignment with the purpose of increasing canopy cover in Toronto through tree planting and stewardship on private land.
  • Demonstrated experience and capacity of the applicant to successfully complete and maintain the project over the long term, with clearly defined deliverables.
  • Reasonableness of project costs and clear demonstration of meeting the 50% matching funding requirement (cash and/or in-kind).
  • Potential impact of the project in terms of increasing tree canopy cover and related environmental benefits.

  • Create an account and organizational profile on the Toronto Grants, Rebates and Incentives Portal (TGRIP)
  • Prepare all required supporting documents and information for submission

Submit the grant application

  • Complete the online application form via TGRIP
  • Upload all supporting documentation including compliance declarations
  • Ensure the application is submitted before 4 pm on August 15, 2025

Undergo application review

  • Your application undergoes an initial review for completeness and alignment with guidelines
  • If selected, the application proceeds to full review by a panel of City staff and subject matter experts
  • Additional information may be requested as part of the review process

Complete funding agreement

  • If approved, sign the Letter of Understanding (LOU) with the City of Toronto
  • Provide a Certificate of Insurance (COI) with specified coverage limits
  • Submit two years of audited financial statements, or work with a trustee organization if required

Additional information

  • Grant funding is available for projects of up to 12 months, specifically between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026.
  • For funding requests exceeding $50,000, Urban Forestry must be contacted in advance to discuss project scope and eligibility.
  • There are virtual information sessions available for prospective applicants on specific dates prior to the application deadline.
  • Accommodation is available upon request to support participation in the funding process, such as alternate document formats or off-hour meetings.
