- Research and development to support the design and approval of the system, technology, or bio-product and demonstrate code compliance, including engineering design, testing, and numerical modelling
- Deployment of MMC on-site and off-site
- Standardization of the design concept, including preapproved engineering solutions and prototypes
- Construction and post-construction related activities, including the cost of innovative wood-based building technology or system and bio-product, manufacturing and processing of wood-based assemblies, case studies, and in situ testing, instrumentation, and monitoring

- Legal entities validly incorporated or registered in Canada, including for-profit and not-for-profit organizations such as developers, builders, and not-for-profit housing providers
- Indigenous organizations and communities
- Provincial, territorial, regional and municipal governments, and their departments and agencies
Eligible expenses
- Design development, permitting, and construction drawings
- Research and development, engineering design, testing, and numerical modelling to support design approval and code compliance
- Deployment of MMC on-site and off-site, including efforts to streamline construction, lower costs, reduce timelines, and minimize risks and uncertainties
- Standardization of the design concept, including preapproved engineering solutions and prototypes, and development and implementation of fire safety and moisture management strategies or plans
- Costs of innovative wood-based building technology or system and bio-product, manufacturing and processing of wood-based assemblies, case studies and related documents, and in situ testing, instrumentation, and monitoring
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Costs associated with the production or export of softwood lumber products
Selection criteria
- Proposals offering a high volume of residential units are prioritized.
- Proposals deploying MMC that results in quicker and more cost-effective construction are prioritized.
- Proposals with building designs that can be scaled or replicated by the developer, builder or owner and their design teams are prioritized.
- Proposals including Canadian manufactured wood-based products and advanced bio-based products are prioritized.
- Rated criteria are innovation, cost effectiveness and replicability, technical feasibility, business case, experience and expertise, value for investment, timing or project readiness, and benefits to Canadians.
How to apply
- Review the application form and guidebook through the NRCan Funding Portal.
- Complete the application form offline if needed, using the Word version available through the portal.
- Submit the completed application form with supporting documentation through the NRCan Funding Portal.
Processing and Agreement
- Each application that meets the mandatory criteria is reviewed by an interdisciplinary panel of experts
- GCWood notifies applicants of their proposal result
- Successful projects move on to the due diligence phase
- NRCan acknowledges receipt of an application or proposal within five business days of receiving it
- NRCan issues an official written funding decision within 100 business days of the closing date of the call for proposals, or within 100 business days of receiving the proposal for a continuous intake process; payments are issued within 30 calendar days of receiving invoices if all conditions in the Contribution Agreement are met
