Getty Residential Grant eligibility updated
The Residential Grants FAQs now state that the Getty Scholars Program at the Villa does not offer Predoctoral or Postdoctoral Fellowships, replacing the prior guidance that postdoctoral fellowships were available there. The FAQ also clarifies that both Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered only through the Getty Scholars Program, and the Scholars & Fellows information page now says those pages are no longer being updated and that applicants should communicate directly with OSIP staff for specific questions.

Who is eligible?
- Researchers of all nationalities working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences may apply.
- Scholar Grants are for established researchers and professionals.
Who is not eligible
- Current Getty staff and members of their immediate family are not eligible for Scholar Grants.
- Individuals who have received a Getty Scholar award within the past six years are not eligible to re-apply.
Eligible expenses
- Prerequisite courses taken specifically to apply to graduate school in art conservation
- Certificate courses in conservation
- Domestic conservation conference attendance
- Other professional-development opportunities related to the internship
- Research travel for Graduate Interns, up to $3,000
Selection criteria
- Overall quality of the application, including adherence to the annual theme
- Contribution to the advancement of the applicant’s field of scholarship or practice
- Applicant’s past achievements
- Applicant’s qualifications to undertake the project
- For organization-hosted internships, goal alignment, internship design, organizational strength, and history of past internships
How to apply
- Apply through the relevant online Getty application form or Fluxx grant portal when applications are open.
- Create or update your account and password, log in, and begin a new application.
- For Getty Marrow internships at LA-area organizations, consult the sortable list and then contact the representative listed with your application materials.
- Submit the required materials through the application system by the stated deadline, or by the host organization’s instructions for external internships.
Processing and Agreement
- Applications are reviewed by Getty staff and outside experts through selection committees or screening processes.
- Finalists may be contacted for interviews.
- Applicants are notified of the Getty Foundation’s or Getty’s decision in spring, May, or by March or April depending on the program.
- Selected organizational hosts are responsible for recruiting eligible interns.
Additional information
- The Getty Research Institute Scholars Program, African American Art History Initiative grants, and Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowship applications are paused for 2027–2028 because of the Getty Center temporary closure.
- The Getty Villa and Getty Conservation Institute will continue to accept applications for residential grants in 2027–2028.
