Eligibility
Who is eligible?
- Scholars of any nationality or place of residence may apply to Getty residential grants.
- Researchers and practitioners of all nationalities working in conservation, historic preservation, heritage science, and related fields may apply to Conservation Guest Scholars.
- Currently enrolled undergraduates in bachelor’s or associate’s degree programs may apply to Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internships.
- Graduate students enrolled in relevant graduate programs, or individuals who completed a relevant graduate degree on or after January 1, 2023, may apply to Graduate Internships.
- Museums or visual arts organizations in Los Angeles County that are nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations or fiscally sponsored visual arts organizations may apply to host a Getty Marrow intern.
Who is not eligible
- Current Getty staff and members of their immediate family are not eligible for Scholar Grants or Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships.
- Students enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible for Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internships.
- Individuals who have received a Getty Scholar award within the past six years are not eligible to reapply.
- Proposals for postdoctoral research or research that contributes to a PhD or other academic degree will not be considered for Conservation Guest Scholars.
- Organizations without a physical office and/or location in Los Angeles, nonprofit performing arts, arts service, and literary arts organizations, and non-exhibiting organizations whose primary mission is not arts-related are ineligible to host interns.

- Domestic conservation conference attendance
- Other professional-development opportunities related to the internship
- Research travel for Graduate Interns, up to $3,000
Selection criteria
- Overall quality of the application, including adherence to the annual theme
- Contribution to the advancement of the applicant’s field of scholarship or practice
- Applicant’s past achievements
- Applicant’s qualifications to undertake the project
- For organization-hosted internships, goal alignment, internship design, organizational strength, and history of past internships
How to apply
- Apply through the relevant online Getty application form or Fluxx grant portal when applications are open.
- Create or update your account and password, log in, and begin a new application.
- For Getty Marrow internships at LA-area organizations, consult the sortable list and then contact the representative listed with your application materials.
- Submit the required materials through the application system by the stated deadline, or by the host organization’s instructions for external internships.
Processing and Agreement
- Applications are reviewed by Getty staff and outside experts through selection committees or screening processes.
- Finalists may be contacted for interviews.
- Applicants are notified of the Getty Foundation’s or Getty’s decision in spring, May, or by March or April depending on the program.
- Selected organizational hosts are responsible for recruiting eligible interns.
Additional information
- The Getty Research Institute Scholars Program, African American Art History Initiative grants, and Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowship applications are paused for 2027–2028 because of the Getty Center temporary closure.
- The Getty Villa and Getty Conservation Institute will continue to accept applications for residential grants in 2027–2028.
