Overview
Genome Alberta’s Genomics Data Connect: Accelerating Agriculture Innovation provides up to $250,000 per project to support collaborative, omics-based research that unlocks value from public agricultural datasets using big data analytics, AI, and machine learning. Eligible projects integrate and link genomics data across soils, crops, livestock, and honeybee health to deliver practical outcomes such as improved disease detection, optimized breeding and performance, and enhanced climate resilience.
Activities funded
- Collaborative, omics-based agriculture research that links and uses existing public datasets across soils, crops, livestock and/or honeybee health to generate new insights and practical solutions.
- Projects applying big data analytics, artificial intelligence and/or machine learning to integrated agriculture genomics datasets to deliver measurable producer benefits (e.g., earlier disease detection, reduced input costs, optimized performance traits).
- Field validation of disease-resilient crop varieties using genomic biomarkers to support breeding programs.
- Integrated ‘omics, nutrition and environmental data projects to build a systems-level understanding of beef cattle performance.
- Genomics-informed research to improve honeybee sustainability.
Documents Needed
- Expression of Interest (EOI) form
Eligibility
- The project must be led by an Alberta-based researcher affiliated with an eligible organization (e.g., academic institution, government research organization/lab, or incorporated not-for-profit with an explicit research mandate).
- The project must demonstrate engagement with an agriculture sector stakeholder (private or public) willing to support the project (cash or in-kind) and show commitment to implement the deliverables.
- The project must include an end-user organization that intends to implement the project deliverables (e.g., industry stakeholders/companies, industry consortia, government departments, or not-for-profit organizations).
- Genome Alberta funds must be spent in Alberta (with limited exceptions for out-of-jurisdiction services, with strong justification).
- If research activities occur outside Alberta, the project must deliver benefits to Alberta equivalent to those expected if the research were conducted in Alberta.
Who is eligible?
- Agriculture and agri-food industry stakeholders (private or public sector)
- Companies (end-users) intending to implement project deliverables through operations or commercialization
- Industry consortia
- Government departments (federal, provincial, municipal)
- Not-for-profit organizations (end-users) intending to implement project deliverables
Eligible geographic areas
- Alberta (projects must be led by an Alberta-based researcher; Genome Alberta funds must be spent in Alberta).
How to apply
1
Review program documents
- Review the initiative overview and funding guidelines
- Confirm the project fits the omics-based, interdisciplinary and collaborative research focus
2
Confirm eligibility requirements
- Confirm the project is led by an Alberta-based researcher
- Ensure the applicant is an eligible organization (academic institution, government organization/lab with an explicit research mandate, or incorporated not-for-profit with an explicit research mandate)
- Confirm Genome Alberta funds will be spent in Alberta (or justify any out-of-jurisdiction service provider)
3
Secure end-user engagement
- Engage an agriculture sector end-user/stakeholder willing to provide cash and/or in-kind support
- Demonstrate the end-user’s desire/commitment to implement anticipated deliverables to drive sector impact
4
Build the co-funding plan
- Prepare a co-funding plan meeting the minimum 1:1 co-funding ratio (Genome Alberta: all co-funding sources)
- Confirm the Genome Alberta contribution requested is within the maximum of $250,000 per project
5
Submit the Expression of Interest
- Complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) form
- Briefly describe the limitation(s) the project aims to solve, the project activities, deliverables, benefits to Alberta, team experience/connections, and the co-funding plan
- Submit the EOI by February 10, 2026
6
Await EOI decision
- Wait for the EOI review and selection decision
- If selected, prepare to submit a full proposal
7
Submit the full proposal
- Submit the full proposal if invited after the EOI stage
- Submit the full proposal by March 30, 2026
8
Await award results
- Wait for the notice of awards (April 20, 2026)
- If funded, plan to start the project on July 1, 2026, for a maximum term of 2 years
Processing and Agreement
- Genome Alberta reviews Expressions of Interest (EOIs) and selects projects to be invited to submit a Full Proposal.
- Genome Alberta assesses Full Proposals and makes final funding decisions.
- Applicants are informed of the funding decision at the “Notice of Awards” date (April 20, 2026).
Additional information
- The initiative is supported by the Government of Alberta.
- A FAQ document is available from the program’s information session materials.
- Links to an initiative overview PDF and a portfolio of previously funded projects are provided as reference resources.
