Overview
Genome British Columbia’s Societal Issues Competition (SOC4) provides up to $250,000 per project to support stand‑alone research on societal issues arising from genomics-based innovations, specifically challenges in the use or accessibility of genomic tests in the health sector. Eligible activities include qualitative or mixed-methods research that explores the problem, assesses potential countermeasures, and develops and pilots implementation plans within a structured project timeline of up to 24 months.

- Research projects that identify and analyze societal issues arising from genomics-based innovations.
- Studies on public perspectives and acceptance of genomics applications in specific sectors (e.g., health).
- Projects that develop and assess practices or policies to support appropriate uptake of genomics-based applications.
- Initiatives that determine when the adoption of particular genomics applications would not be appropriate in the health sector.
- Research that examines cross-cutting societal themes related to the use and accessibility of genomic tests in health care.
Eligibility
- The project must be led by an academic researcher based at a British Columbia university, college, the BC Institute of Technology, a government facility, or another BC-based research or health institution.
- The project team must include members with expertise in qualitative and/or mixed-methods research relevant to the proposed work.
- The project team must include at least one end-user partner, supported by a letter of support.
- The project must address a challenge related to the use or accessibility of a genomic test in the health sector.
- The project must incorporate qualitative research methods and clearly outline research phases within the specified percentage ranges for each phase.

How to apply

Review eligibility and program details
- Review the SOC4 Request for Applications and program overview on Genome BC’s website
- Confirm that your team and project meet all applicant and project eligibility criteria
- Contact societalissues@genomebc.ca for general program information or to discuss eligibility questions

Prepare and submit SOI
- Prepare a Statement of Interest (SOI) that outlines your research question
- Ensure the SOI clearly shows how the project addresses the strategic focus of the current SOC intake
- Submit the completed SOI by email to societalissues@genomebc.ca by the stated deadline

Await SOI decision
- Wait for Genome BC to review your Statement of Interest
- Receive notification of the SOI decision on the indicated date

Prepare full application and budget
- If invited, complete the Full Application form describing the detailed research plan
- Develop an accompanying project budget using the SOC4 Budget Template
- Ensure the application reflects program parameters, including maximum funding and project duration

Submit full application
- Submit the completed Full Application and budget by email to societalissues@genomebc.ca
- Ensure submission is received by Genome BC before the application deadline and specified time

Await funding decision
- Wait for Genome BC’s review of your full application
- Receive notification of funding results on the published results date

- Each intake of the competition has its own specific strategic focus, and only projects aligned with that focus will be considered.
- Genome BC has allocated a total investment of $500,000 to the SOC4 initiative.
- The maximum duration for funded projects under SOC4 is 24 months.
- Program documentation includes a Request for Applications, Statement of Interest form, Application Form and Budget Template, all provided as downloadable files.
