Overview
The Genome British Columbia Sector Innovation Program provides up to $500,000 per project to support strategically important genomics research that addresses the needs and challenges of key sectors in BC’s economy and society. Eligible activities include research projects that employ genomics and related disciplines, within budgets of $250,000 to $500,000 over 24 to 36 months, aligned with the specific strategic focus of each intake.
Activities funded
- Genomics research projects that address the specific strategic focus identified for the current Sector Innovation Program intake.
- Applied genomics initiatives designed to tackle defined needs or challenges in key sectors of British Columbia’s economy or society.
- Interdisciplinary genomics projects that bring together experts from different fields (e.g., climate science, genetics, public health) to address sector-wide issues.
Eligibility
- The project must align with the objectives of the Sector Innovation Program and the specific strategic focus of the current intake.
- The project must use genomics (including related fields such as bioinformatics, epigenomics, metabolomics, metagenomics, proteomics or transcriptomics) to achieve its objectives.
- The Project Leader must be faculty or employed by a BC-based post-secondary institution or its affiliated hospital/research institute, a regional health authority, a BC-based federal government laboratory, or a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization with a research or knowledge translation mandate.
- The Project Leader must not be leading an active project already funded through the SIP program and may not be listed as Project Leader on more than one SIP application in the same intake.
- If the Project Leader has existing Genome BC–funded projects, all administrative requirements for those projects (such as reporting) must be up to date.
Who is eligible?
- Post-secondary educational institutions and their affiliated hospitals or research institutes in British Columbia
- Regional health authorities in British Columbia
- BC-based laboratories of federal government departments or agencies
- Non-governmental, not-for-profit organizations in British Columbia with a research or knowledge translation mandate (including community or charitable organizations)
Eligible geographic areas
- Organizations and institutions based in British Columbia.
Selection criteria
- Alignment of the project with the overall objectives of the Sector Innovation Program and the specific strategic focus of the intake.
- Use of genomics (including related fields such as bioinformatics, epigenomics, metabolomics, metagenomics, proteomics and transcriptomics) as a core approach to achieve the project objectives.
- Compliance with the intake-specific project parameters, including budget range and project duration.
- Demonstrated interdisciplinary approach, for example collaboration between climate scientists, geneticists, public health experts, community members, rightsholders and other relevant specialists (considered a strength in the review process).
