Overview
The Genomics Innovation Fund – Intake 002 provides up to $250,000 per project to support transformative genomics/omics innovation projects in British Columbia with clear commercial potential. Eligible activities include technology development and application-focused research that advance an innovation along the TRL scale and demonstrate societal, environmental, or economic impact.
Activities funded
- Innovation projects that develop or advance genomics/omics-based technologies with clear commercial potential.
- Projects that use genomics/omics as a tool to create new or improved products, services, processes or systems.
- Technology development initiatives designed to move a genomics/omics innovation at least one step along the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale.
- Applied genomics/omics projects that target specific societal, environmental or economic challenges with measurable impact.
- Translational research projects that help bridge genomics/omics discoveries toward market-ready applications or solutions.
Eligibility
- The applicant must be a BC-based organization, such as a post-secondary institution or affiliated hospital/research institute, a government laboratory or unit, a non-governmental not-for-profit with a research or knowledge translation mandate, or an industry/commercial enterprise.
- The project must involve innovation in genomics/omics or use omics as a means to innovate.
- The project must have freedom to operate (FTO) and be able to confirm this.
- The project must clearly advance the innovation by at least one step on the technology readiness level (TRL) scale and outline how further steps will be pursued beyond the funded project.
- The project must describe and justify its potential societal, environmental or economic impact and the challenge(s) it addresses.

- Post-secondary institutions in British Columbia
- Affiliated hospitals and research institutes of BC post-secondary institutions
- Laboratories or units of British Columbia government departments, ministries or agencies
- Non-governmental, not-for-profit organizations in BC with a research or knowledge translation mandate
- Industry and commercial enterprises based in British Columbia

- Organizations and enterprises based in British Columbia, Canada.
Selection criteria
- Use of omics/genomics to drive innovation within the project.
- Clear demonstration of freedom to operate (FTO) for the proposed innovation.
- Ability of the project to advance the technology readiness level (TRL) by at least one step, with a credible plan for subsequent steps beyond the funded project.
- Clarity and significance of the expected impact (societal, environmental, economic) and how that impact will be measured.
- Fit of the project within the program’s objective to develop transformative genomics innovations with commercial potential.

Verify eligibility and fit

- Confirm that your project involves innovation in omics and has freedom to operate (FTO)
- Ensure you are eligible as faculty or staff of a qualified BC institution or BC-based enterprise
- Verify that your project scope, budget and duration align with GIF parameters

Set up Proposal Central account
- Create a user account on Proposal Central, the online system used for GIF applications
- Use the Applicant’s Guide to Proposal Central available on Genome BC’s website for support
- Familiarize yourself with the Proposal Central Frequently Asked Questions

Prepare and submit LOI
- Prepare a Letter of Intent (LOI) outlining your genomics innovation project
- Explain how the project fits the GIF scope and demonstrates commercial potential
- Indicate how the project will advance at least one step on the TRL scale and outline subsequent steps
- Describe the expected societal, environmental or economic impact and how it will be assessed
- Submit the LOI through Proposal Central by May 21, 2025

Await LOI decision
- Wait for Genome BC to review your LOI within the GIF process
- Receive notification of the LOI decision and, if successful, an invitation to submit a full application on July 24, 2025

Complete full application
- Prepare the full application in Proposal Central following the GIF Program Guidelines
- Provide a detailed research plan demonstrating innovation in omics and advancement on the TRL scale
- Justify the project budget up to a maximum of $250,000 and a duration up to 12 months (or up to 18 months with strong rationale)
- Describe the project’s potential commercial outcomes and broader impacts
- Complete all required fields and upload the GIF budget template and any required documents

Submit full application
- Review all sections of the application and attached documents in Proposal Central
- Ensure the project timeline respects the maximum 18‑month limit
- Confirm that no materials are missing and that the application complies with GIF requirements
- Submit the full application in Proposal Central by September 8, 2025, 2:00 p.m. PT

Await funding decision
- Wait for Genome BC to complete the review of full applications
- Receive the funding decision notification expected on December 9, 2025
