Overview

The Gender Equity Grant provides up to $5,000 per community-based project to enhance gender equity across the Northwest Territories. Funding supports initiatives that address gender-based inequalities, promote awareness and education or social action, build partnerships and organizational capacity, develop policy, or conduct applied community research.

Activities funded

  • Programs or services that address historical and social gender-based inequalities.
  • Initiatives that promote awareness, education, or social action on gender equity.
  • Projects that advance gender equity through partnership building, capacity building, policy development, or applied community research.
  • Projects that build an organization’s development and capacity to effectively enhance gender equity in the Northwest Territories.

  • Itemized project budget (planned costs and expenses)

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be a non-government organization, a community government, or an Indigenous government.
  • The project must be a community-based project carried out in the Northwest Territories.
  • The project must promote the elimination of gender-specific inequalities in the Northwest Territories.
  • The project must address at least one program objective (e.g., addressing historical and social gender-based inequalities; promoting awareness/education/social action on gender equity; advancing gender equity through partnerships/capacity building/policy development/applied community research; or strengthening an organization’s capacity to enhance gender equity in the Northwest Territories).

Who is eligible?

  • Non-government organizations (NGOs) / non-profit organizations
  • Community governments (municipal corporations)
  • Indigenous governments

Who is not eligible

  • For-profit businesses (the program is restricted to non-government organizations, community governments, and Indigenous governments).
  • Organizations outside the Northwest Territories (projects must be community-based and carried out in the Northwest Territories).

Eligible geographic areas

  • Northwest Territories (Canada).

Selection criteria

  • How well the proposed project supports a service, program, or initiative that addresses gender inequality.
  • The project’s potential to effectively provide gender-based support through meaningful collaboration or increased knowledge.
  • Whether the project is a community-based project carried out in the Northwest Territories.
  • Whether the project will result in a final project output (e.g., a report or presentation) that can be shared with participants and the broader community.
  • Evidence of community support and overall financial feasibility of the project.

Complete the application form

  • Email the completed application form to genderequity@gov.nt.ca

Await the decision

  • Wait for the written decision (no later than 60 days after the application due date)

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed by a committee and prioritized based on how well the project meets the program’s objectives and criteria.
  • Grant decisions are made and communicated in writing to all applicants.
  • Applicants will receive a written decision no later than 60 days after the application due date.

Additional information

  • The 2025–2026 funding for this grant program has been fully expended and the program is currently closed.
  • A call for applications is issued at the beginning of each fiscal year.
  • Applications submitted after the deadline may be considered if funding is still available.
  • Approved projects cannot receive funding under the Women’s Initiatives Grant in the same fiscal year.
