Who is eligible?
- Researchers affiliated with a Canadian-based organization
- Post-secondary institutions and other organizations involved in applied research
Who is not eligible
- Full-time employees of a Government of Alberta ministry
- Projects focused only on general mental health or wellness without a clear PTSI focus
- Drug trials
- For-profit product development or endorsement
- Projects directed primarily to a provincial or federal agency, board, or commission as the main beneficiary
Eligible expenses
- Salaries and benefits for trainees and support staff
- Project supplies
- Travel and subsistence directly related to the project
- Knowledge transfer activities
- Permanent equipment needed for the project

- The principal applicant’s salary or benefits
- Overhead and administrative costs
- Teaching buyouts and other applicant responsibilities
- Capital purchases
- Projects already in progress or completed

Processing and Agreement
- Applications are reviewed individually by the Ministry.
- The Ministry may also consider publicly available information and previous grant performance.
- Applicants are notified in writing of the outcome.
- Successful applicants must sign a grant agreement before the project can start.
- Reporting and record-keeping obligations continue after approval.
Additional information
- Applicants may submit more than one project in a funding year, but each project needs a separate application.
- Projects can continue work previously funded by SPHIFR.
- Previous funding does not guarantee future funding.
- The Ministry may quote portions of successful applications in public communications.
