First Nations Energy Efficiency Program guidelines updated
The June 2026 program guidelines now show an online application deadline of March 31, 2026 for that year’s home allotment, and they require all work to be completed within 24 months after pre-payment. If work is not finished within that period, a Project Completion Plan must be submitted. The guidelines also newly spell out ineligible homes and projects, including off-reserve member homes, additions or expansions, commercial or mixed-use buildings, new-home projects, household appliances, and portable equipment. They further clarify that communities apply online, must submit selected homes, and must return completed Statements of Work within two months of receipt.

Who is eligible?
- All of New Brunswick’s First Nations.
Who is not eligible
- Individual homeowners or renters cannot apply directly.
Eligible expenses
- Insulation work, including attic, exterior wall, basement, crawlspace, and floor insulation.
- Air sealing, vapor barrier installation, heat pumps, hot water tanks, ventilation upgrades, and thermostat replacement.
- Window, exterior door, and patio sliding door replacement when eligible.
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Projects, renovations, or additions that are already in progress or were completed before enrollment.
- Projects in New Homes.
- Household appliances such as refrigerators, ranges, clothes washers and dryers, and dishwashers.
- Portable equipment such as air conditioning units, space heaters, and desk fans.
- Oil or gas fired HVAC equipment, including upgrades to more efficient oil or gas equipment, and heat pump hot water heaters, natural gas hot water heaters, propane hot water heaters, and instantaneous hot water heaters.

Selection criteria
- Homes are selected based on community priorities and available funding.
- Homes most in need of repair, such as the Homes of Elders or the oldest Homes within the Community, may be prioritized.
- Final decisions are made with local leadership.
How to apply
- Express interest to your community’s Housing Administration.
- The community applies each fiscal year for a specific number of homes to be registered through the program.
- Submit the application online by March 31st, 2026.
Processing and Agreement
- Energy Evaluations are scheduled through the Community Contact and completed by an Energy Advisor from a Service Organization.
- NB Power reviews the recommended upgrades and creates a Statement of Work for each Home.
- The Community Contact initials the accepted measures in the Statement of Work to formally approve them.
- After the upgrades are completed, a post-upgrade Energy Evaluation confirms the work before final payment.
- The Community Contact submits a Request for Payment with proof of payment for the remaining Total Approved Incentive.

- The program is community-led and delivered by NB Power in partnership with the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council.
