Overview

This CIHR Operating Grant supports a Canadian component of a joint transnational One Health antimicrobial resistance project to advance innovative, cost-effective AMR treatment options, with up to Can$600,000 total (Can$200,000 per year for up to 3 years). Eligible activities must address Topic 3 by assessing how veterinary and agricultural use of antibacterial and antifungal drugs affects AMR emergence and transmission to humans and the environment, and improving formulations, dosage, delivery, routes of administration, and treatment regimens to inform policies restricting certain antimicrobials for exclusive human use.

Activities funded

  • Joint transnational One Health research projects that advance innovative, cost-effective antimicrobial resistance (AMR) treatment options and include human health research activities.
  • Research assessing how veterinary and agricultural use of antibacterial and antifungal drugs (e.g., mechanisms of action, formulations, routes of administration, and treatment regimens) affects the emergence and transmission of AMR to humans and the environment.
  • Projects aimed at improving veterinary/agricultural antimicrobial formulation, dosage, delivery, routes of administration, and treatment regimens (including pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics) to reduce cross-resistance or AMR transmission to humans and the environment.
  • Research generating evidence to inform policies that restrict certain antimicrobials for exclusive human use.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be an independent researcher affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution (or an affiliated hospital, research institute, or other eligible Canadian non-profit organization with a health research/knowledge translation mandate), or be affiliated with (or be) an Indigenous non-governmental organization in Canada with a research/knowledge translation mandate.
  • The nominated principal applicant must have their substantive role in Canada for the full duration of the grant term.
  • The Canadian administering organization (“Institution Paid”) must be authorized by CIHR to receive and manage the funds.
  • The project must be relevant to EUP OHAMR JTC1 “OH-TREAT” and specifically address CIHR’s Topic 3 on veterinary/agricultural antimicrobial use and its impact on AMR transmission risk to humans and the environment.
  • The project must include human health research activities (CIHR will only fund projects that address human health).

Who is eligible?

  • Indigenous non-governmental organizations (Indigenous NGOs) in Canada with a mandate for research or knowledge mobilization.
  • Non-profit organizations (e.g., hospitals, research institutes, or other organizations) with a mandate for health research or knowledge mobilization, affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution.

Who is not eligible

  • For-profit companies (the Nominated Principal Applicant must be an independent researcher affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution/affiliated institution, or affiliated with/being an Indigenous non-governmental organization with a research and/or knowledge translation mandate).
  • Organizations or projects focused only on animal health, plants, food and/or the environment without including human health research activities (CIHR will not fund these).
  • Applicants/projects that do not address the required call topic for CIHR funding (Topic 3); proposals outside this topic will not be deemed relevant and will not receive CIHR funding.

Eligible geographic areas

  • Canada (Nominated Principal Applicant must have their substantive role in Canada for the duration of the grant term).

Selection criteria

  • Relevance to CIHR mandate and Topic 3 (applications must be aligned with CIHR’s mandate and Topic 3 to be deemed relevant for CIHR funding).
