Overview
The Energy Innovation Program — Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage RD&D provided up to $50 million to support research, development, and demonstration activities advancing commercial CCUS technologies in Canada. The program targeted projects in capture, storage and transportation, and utilization of CO2 to reduce emissions where electrification or low-carbon fuels are not feasible.
Financing terms and conditions
- As part of Budget 2021, up to $319 million allocated over seven years for research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) in CCUS technologies.
- In 2021-22, up to $50 million was available in support for FEED studies for large-scale CCUS facilities during the call for proposals.
Activities funded
- Advancing technologies for capturing carbon emissions from various industrial sources.
- Developing and improving methods for the safe, permanent storage and transportation of captured CO2 across Canada.
- Researching and demonstrating new ways to convert and utilize CO2 into commercially viable products for long-term or permanent sequestration.
Eligibility
- The applicant may be a business, academic institution, non-profit organization, or government or federal laboratory.
- The project must focus on research, development, or demonstration activities related to carbon capture, utilization, or storage (CCUS) technologies.
- The project must contribute to advancing commercial viability of CCUS and support progress toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
