Overview
The Digital Health Sandbox program provides up to $300,000 in funding to accelerate the development and implementation of digital health technologies in Alberta. The program supports projects focused on enhancing interoperability of clinical tools, secure data sharing, and advancing health innovation by Alberta-based SMEs and academic institutions.
Activities funded
- Advancing health technology solutions that improve interoperability between clinical products from different vendors using established standards.
- Developing systems to enable compliant, secure communication and data sharing to enhance collaboration among health professionals.
- Implementing tools and platforms that increase data sharing capacity for health care and innovation while managing privacy and cybersecurity risks.
- Creating software or web portals to analyze patient populations using real world data to support evidence-based health care decisions.

Eligibility
- The applicant must be an Alberta-based Post-Secondary Institution, Government Entity, or For-Profit Small to Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) with fewer than 500 full-time employees and less than $50 million annual gross revenue.
- The company must be incorporated in Alberta or incorporated in another jurisdiction with extra-provincial registration in Alberta, or be a General Partnership, Limited Partnership, or Limited Liability Partnership registered in Alberta.
- The applicant must have a significant physical and corporate operational presence in Alberta, as well as appropriate Alberta ownership, with clear intent that operational benefits will primarily support Alberta.
- The applicant must be in good financial standing with Alberta Innovates and its subsidiaries and be authorized to undertake the proposed project.
- The technology or solution developed must be at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 6 to 8 and must be completed within 18 months.

- Companies not based in Alberta or without significant operational presence in Alberta.
- Organizations that are not post-secondary institutions, government entities, or for-profit SMEs as defined by the program.
- Companies with over 500 full-time employees or annual gross revenue above $50,000,000.
- Applicants not in good financial standing with Alberta Innovates or its subsidiaries (e.g., those with past bad debt).

Sign Investment Agreement
- If approved, sign the Investment Agreement with Alberta Innovates
- Agreement details project milestones, reporting, and payment terms
Additional information
- Funding is provided on a milestone completion basis, requiring submission of Progress or Final Reports before successive payments are released.
- Outcomes of funded projects may be monitored for up to five years following completion to assess the economic, social, health, or environmental impacts.
- Alberta Innovates retains full discretion over investment decisions and the evaluation process, including reviewer selection and criteria.
- Applications are reviewed by both Alberta Innovates employees and external expert reviewers to ensure high project quality.
