Designated Heritage Property Grant Program

• Completed application form with a detailed project description.
• At least two cost estimates itemizing labour and material costs.
• Recent images showing the building exterior and the specific area for the proposed project.
• Relevant historical images, plans, documentation, or studies.
• For structural work, an Engineer Condition Assessment, plus a timeline showing when the work will begin and the expected completion date.

Who is eligible?

• Designated heritage property owners or their authorized agents acting in writing on behalf of the owner.

Who is not eligible

• Designated heritage properties owned by any level of government, except where a non-profit or community group is responsible for maintenance of the property.
• Properties that are currently receiving other grants from the City of Mississauga.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

• Work completed before application submission.
• Projects that do not contribute to the heritage attributes of the property, including the introduction of new features or additions.
• Synthetic stone.
• Vinyl, Aluminum, or PVC clad windows or doors, including insulated doors.
• Power washing, sandblasting, or cleaning of masonry surfaces unless it is necessary for the conservation of the structure.
• Landscaping unless it is noted within the designation by-law or proven to be a restored original element.

• Projects are prioritized when they restore existing elements rather than replace them.
• Applications are assessed using best practices in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act, the Ontario Tool Kit, and the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Heritage Places.
• The application must clearly outline the work to be undertaken, the materials used, and the need for the project.
• The project must be on a heritage element identified in a heritage by-law or a Conservation District plan.
• Priority may be given to properties that have not previously received funding, or that completed a funded project on a heritage element within the last two years.

• Go to the City of Mississauga Heritage Planning website and click APPLY NOW.
• Register as an individual, enter your name and email address, create a password, and click Create Account.
• Verify your account through the emailed verification link.
• Return to the Grants Portal, click View programs, and select Designated Heritage Property Grant to begin the application.

• After each review period, City staff review applications received up to that point to determine eligibility and completeness.
• The applications are forwarded to the Heritage Property Grant working group for review and recommendation.
• The working group’s recommendations go to the Director of the Parks, Forestry & Environment Division for approval or rejection, and the Director may delegate this role to the Manager of Indigenous Relations, Heritage & Museums.
• Applicants receive written notice of the funding decision and must inform the City if they choose not to continue with the project.
• Approved projects must be completed by October 31, 2026, and final invoices are due by November 30, 2026 before the cheque is issued.
