Overview

The Data Access, Integration and Analysis Program (DAIA) 2 provides up to $250,000 per project to support the secure integration and analysis of researcher-supplied genomics data with clinical and administrative health data from the Health Data Platform BC (HDPBC). Funding supports ethically approved projects that upload tabular genomics data to HDPBC and carry out data linkage, integration, and analysis within the Trusted Analysis Environment using tools such as SQL, SAS, Python, and R.

Activities funded

  • Research projects that integrate researcher-supplied genomics data with clinical and administrative health data available through the Health Data Platform BC (HDPBC).
  • Studies that securely link and analyze genomics and health sector datasets within HDPBC’s Trusted Analysis Environment (TAE-BC).
  • Projects that generate and upload tabular genomics data for enrolled patients to HDPBC for combined analysis with curated health data.
  • Health research initiatives that use HDPBC’s analytical tools (e.g., SQL, SAS, Python, R) to address clinical needs and improve healthcare outcomes in British Columbia.
  • Ethically approved initiatives that demonstrate clear benefits from using HDPBC for data access, integration, linkage and analysis in genomics-related research.

Eligibility

  • The project must involve a cohort of patients enrolled in British Columbia and require access to data available within the Health Data Platform BC (HDPBC) for data linkage and integration.
  • The project must have genomics data for the enrolled patients available by the project start date, or be able to generate such data within the first six months from already collected samples.
  • The project must clearly demonstrate the benefits of using the HDPBC platform for data access, integration, linkage and analysis to achieve its objectives, and must upload its tabular genomics data into HDPBC for integration and analysis.
  • The Project Leader must be an academic researcher based at a BC post-secondary institution (or affiliated hospital/research institute), a federal government laboratory or regional health authority, or a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization with a research or knowledge translation mandate.
  • If the Project Leader is from a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization, the project team must include individuals affiliated with a BC post-secondary institution (or affiliated hospital/research institute) or a federal government laboratory/regional health authority so that the HDPBC data access request can be led by an eligible institution.

Who is eligible?

  • Post-secondary educational institutions in British Columbia
  • Affiliated hospitals or research institutes of BC post-secondary institutions
  • Laboratories of federal government departments or agencies located in BC
  • Regional health authorities in British Columbia
  • Non-governmental, not-for-profit organizations in BC with a research or knowledge translation mandate

Who is not eligible

  • Private sector companies seeking industry partnerships to access Health Data Platform BC (HDPBC) data, as industry partnerships for this purpose are explicitly not allowed.
  • Organizations whose main legal entity is a for-profit business, since eligible Project Leaders must come from academic, governmental, or not-for-profit research-focused institutions.

Eligible expenses

  • Project costs up to a total budget of $250,000, including applicable data access fees for use of the Health Data Platform BC (HDPBC) analytic environment.

Eligible geographic areas

  • Academic and research organizations based in British Columbia, Canada.
  • Projects involving cohorts of patients enrolled in British Columbia.

How to apply

1

Verify eligibility requirements

  • Review the DAIA 2 program guidelines and eligibility criteria to confirm that your project, data needs, and institution meet all requirements
  • Ensure your project has a BC-enrolled patient cohort, genomics data (or the ability to generate it within six months), and plans to use HDPBC
  • Verify that all Genome BC administrative requirements for any existing projects are up to date
2

Prepare Letter of Intent

  • Prepare a brief outline of your proposed project that clearly addresses all DAIA 2 eligibility criteria
  • Describe the planned use of HDPBC for data access, integration, linkage, and analysis
  • Create an account or log in to Proposal Central, Genome BC’s submission portal
3

Submit Letter of Intent

  • Submit the Letter of Intent (LOI) through Proposal Central by September 25, 2025, before 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time
  • Ensure all required LOI fields are completed according to Genome BC instructions
  • Retain confirmation of submission from Proposal Central for your records
4

Await LOI review outcome

  • Wait for Genome BC to review your LOI for eligibility and alignment with DAIA 2 objectives
  • Receive notification by October 16, 2025, indicating whether you are invited to submit a full proposal
  • Consult Genome BC at DAIA@genomebc.ca if clarification on the LOI decision is needed
5

Prepare full project proposal

  • If invited, develop a detailed proposal describing clinical and administrative data requested via HDPBC and the planned research project
  • Define methods, activities, objectives, milestones, and analysis plans using HDPBC’s Trusted Analysis Environment tools
  • Prepare a detailed budget up to $250,000, including any data access fees, for a project term of up to 24 months
6

Validate proposal before submission

  • Ensure the proposal addresses the evaluation criteria outlined in Appendix 1 of the DAIA 2 Guidelines
  • Review all sections for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with DAIA 2 objectives and HDPBC requirements
  • Obtain any necessary internal approvals from your institution before submission
7

Submit full proposal

  • Submit the full proposal to Genome BC via Proposal Central by November 20, 2025, before 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time
  • Confirm that all required documents and attachments are uploaded correctly
  • Save proof of submission and any confirmation emails from Proposal Central
8

Await funding decision

  • Wait while Genome BC and external reviewers evaluate your proposal against the DAIA 2 criteria
  • Monitor communications for any requests for clarification during the review process
  • Receive the funding decision in early March 2026 from Genome BC

Additional information

  • The program is delivered in collaboration with the Health Data Platform BC (HDPBC) operated by the BC Ministry of Health.
  • Projects must use HDPBC’s Trusted Analysis Environment (TAE-BC), which offers tools such as SQL, SAS, Python, R & Rtools, and MS Office for data analysis.
  • The initiative emphasizes responsible data stewardship aligned with FAIR and CARE data principles and rigorous data governance.
  • Program timelines include an LOI deadline of September 25, 2025, proposal deadline of November 20, 2025, and expected funding decision in early March 2026.
