Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Volunteer Service Groups consisting of City trained/approved Volunteers and a Volunteer Coordinator.

Eligible expenses

  • Eligible building materials for rink construction.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Organized hockey on the ice rink.
  • Shinny on the same ice surface; shinny is only allowed when a separate ice surface is installed by the VSG.

How to apply

  • Find a volunteer coordinator and a group of volunteers who will install, operate and maintain the outdoor ice rink.
  • Complete the Community Ice Rink Program Application Form, the Volunteer Agreement, and the Volunteer Coordinator Agreement.
  • Send the completed application forms by email, fax, or mail to the City of Markham Operations Department.

Processing and Agreement

  • The location and size of the ice rink must be approved by the City before installation.
  • If approved, the volunteer coordinator will be notified.
  • The volunteer coordinator must circulate a petition confirming acceptance by a minimum of 70% of residents adjacent to the park or ice rink location before rink construction, and the petition must be received and approved by City staff before implementation.
  • Completed petition results can be mailed or emailed as an attachment to the City of Markham.
  • The volunteer coordinator will be contacted to meet Operations staff at the park to receive the hoses, water key, and basic instructions for flooding rinks.

Additional information

  • Applications are accepted beginning on September 1 for the following winter season.
  • Applications received after December 15 are subject to availability of materials and department funding.
  • Limited funding is available for this program and the City may not be able to accommodate every request.
  • New winterized water services will not be considered until the available sites have been fully utilized.
