Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Arts-based nonprofit organizations
  • Film, literary, visual, and performing arts organizations

  • Organizations focused on applied arts or competition-based activities

Eligible expenses

  • Artist, curator, and technician fees
  • Production, programming, marketing, and communications costs
  • Salaries, professional fees, rent, utilities, and insurance
  • Equipment maintenance, fixed assets, and facility operating costs
  • Cultural protocol expenses, including honoraria and Elder/Knowledge Keeper fees

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Scholarships, prizes, gratuities, awards, and payments for individual benefit
  • Endowment funds, third-party funding to another organization, and consignment fees
  • Amortization or depreciation expenses, capital expenses, and public sector in-kind or non-cash contributions
  • Capital costs for renovations or facility improvements, land or facility purchase, and major equipment and/or vehicle purchase
  • Bad debt or debt reduction, and other expenses deemed unreasonable by the AFA

  • Most recent, board-approved financial statements
  • Total eligible expenses to a maximum of 12 per cent
  • Equitable distribution of available funds to all eligible applicants

How to apply

  • The AFA only accepts applications through the Front Office portal of the GATE online application system.
  • Click the Apply Now button on the program guidelines page for your grant.
  • If you are a first-time applicant, email registrationafa@gov.ab.ca at least five business days before the application deadline and include your legal name, the funding opportunity, and your email address.
  • Wherever possible, upload support materials as attachments into GATE Front Office; files can be up to 4 MB.
  • Files larger than 4 MB can be emailed or mailed separately to the AFA.
  • Ensure your application is complete in GATE Front Office before the deadline expires; late applications are not accepted.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed by department staff against eligibility criteria
  • Staff prepare recommendations for the AFA Board
  • The AFA Board reviews and approves funding decisions
  • Applicants are notified by email, generally four to six months after the deadline
  • All decisions are final and no appeals are considered

Additional information

  • First-time applicants must contact AFA at least three months before the deadline.
  • Final reporting is required through GATE Front Office.
  • Organizations must credit AFA support in publicity materials.
  • Only one AFA operating grant stream can be received at a time.
