Who is eligible?

  • Canadian-Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs).
  • Pre-revenue startups.
  • Startups with zero global full-time employees.

Eligible expenses

  • Expert support to implement IP strategies, including patent and trademark applications.
  • Mentorship, landscape analysis, prior-art searches and advisory services to develop an IP strategy.
  • Coaching, legal and advisory services to develop sound IP strategies.
  • Educational resources and seminars to learn how to protect IP.

Selection criteria

  • Developing proprietary technology intended to transform the industry or sector, with technology as the primary source of revenue.
  • The revenue model is assessed for viability and sustainability.
  • Business age is considered, from early-age startups to more established scale-ups.
  • The number of global full-time employees is considered.

How to apply

  • Register for the portal.
  • Submit the application.
  • Meet with an IP Advisor.
  • Access funded services if approved.

Processing and Agreement

  • Successful applicants are invited to continue the application process by meeting with an IP Advisor.
  • The IP Advisor assesses IP readiness and helps determine the path forward.
  • If approved, startups are guided to develop and implement their IP strategy.
  • Communitech, Invest Ottawa and North Forge may reject applications at any point in the application process until a statement of work has been signed by both parties.
  • Receiving an invitation to meet an IP Advisor or start working on a statement of work does not guarantee funding.
