TAPA Announces Return of Commercial Theatre Development Fund

Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Canadian-controlled entities and Canadian individuals
  • Ontario-based producers
  • Businesses in theatre production
  • Non-profit companies partnering with commercial theatre producers

Who is not eligible

  • Stand-up comedy and improvisation-based projects
  • Projects relying on government project-based or restricted funding
  • Projects with excessive non-Canadian financial participation

Eligible expenses

  • Artists, creative team, and stage management fees during the workshop
  • Rental of the rehearsal venue
  • General management costs
  • Travel expenses
  • Accessibility support, administrative, and miscellaneous production costs

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Commission fees for writers, composers, orchestrators, and arrangers
  • Preparation fees for directors and choreographers
  • Direct or indirect payments to producers or investors
  • Use of government project-based or restricted funding for non-profit partners
  • Non-scripted performances such as stand-up or improvisation

Selection criteria

  • Commercial viability and potential to reach a commercial presentation within 2 years
  • Original Canadian content
  • Development within Ontario, especially outside Toronto
  • Ontario resident theatre artists and workers

How to apply

  • Step 2: Send Intent to Apply
    • Email a brief Intent to Apply message with a project summary to the Program Manager.
  • Step 3: Submit full application
    • Eligible applicants are invited to apply online through the CTDF portal.
  • Step 4: Await decision
    • Successful applicants are notified a few weeks after the deadline.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed after submission through the CTDF portal
  • Successful applicants are notified a few weeks after the deadline
  • A contract is signed before payment is issued
  • Payments are tied to completion of the workshop

  • Only one application per producer may be submitted per cycle.
  • There are two intake cycles each year.
