Overview
This funding supports interdisciplinary teams using genomic approaches to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Canada’s food systems. It offers up to $3 million for projects that develop and apply genomic tools and technologies with pathways to emissions reductions across the food system value chain.
Activities funded
- Developing genomic tools and technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture and food systems.
- Applying genomic approaches to mitigate the carbon footprint of Canada’s food production systems.
- Projects supporting net-zero emissions by 2050 through genomics-based solutions.
- Initiatives demonstrating pathways to emissions reductions across the food system value chain (production, processing, distribution, consumption).
- Solutions that increase value in production systems without increasing emissions or negative environmental impacts.
Examples of admissible projects:
$ 2,950,000
Genomic selection and microbiome tools to reduce cattle methane emissions
Documents Needed
Eligibility
- The project must use genomic approaches to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the carbon footprint of Canada’s food systems.
- The project must align with the objective of supporting resilient, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable agriculture and food production systems.
- The project should seek solutions that increase value created by production systems without increasing greenhouse gas emissions or amplifying negative environmental impacts.
- The project should demonstrate how outputs could be translated into reduced emissions across the food system value chain (production, processing, distribution, and consumption).
