Catalyst Grant: Addressing Musculoskeletal Conditions and Arthritis in Canadians

Who is eligible?

• Independent researchers appointed at an eligible institution.

Eligible expenses

• Release Time Allowance, up to $20,000 per knowledge user, per grant.
• Expenditures related to the culture and traditions of Indigenous peoples in the conduct of research, with appropriate backup documentation.
• Community mobilization and engagement costs, including culturally relevant promotional items such as tobacco, cloth, feasting and gift-giving for honoring ceremonies, and cash reimbursements acceptable to the individual or community being reimbursed.
• Contracts and/or consultant fees for knowledge translation and communication activities for Elders, community members, and other Knowledge Holders involved in Indigenous community activities.

• Research Approach: health problem relevance, clarity and quality of activities, literature review, sex and gender considerations, feasibility, risk management, and budget justification.
• Originality of the Proposal: potential for new knowledge or innovation and originality of the hypotheses, methods, technology, or applications.
• Applicant(s): strength, expertise, resources, stakeholder involvement, productivity, knowledge translation, and interdisciplinary experience.
• Environment for the Research: facilities, infrastructure, personnel, tools, and access to the target population or community.
• Impact of the Research for the Health of Canadians: need or gap addressed, potential health impact within 5-7 years, dissemination plan, and contribution to future intervention science.

• Complete the Registration step in ResearchNet.
• Complete the Full Application step in ResearchNet.
• During Registration, list all project participants, summarize the proposal, choose only one funding pool, and suggest reviewers.
• During the Full Application, enter proposal information, provide the budget justification, and upload the required supporting materials.
• Upload the scanned signed signature pages and the Routing Slip before submitting the application.

• CIHR-IMHA will perform a relevance review to assess alignment with the objectives and research areas of the funding opportunity.
• Applications not deemed relevant will be withdrawn from the competition.
• The Nominated Principal Applicant must submit an electronic Final Report to CIHR through ResearchNet as the research progresses.
• Successful Principal Applicants are strongly encouraged to actively participate in peer review as members of the CIHR College of Reviewers when invited.
