Overview

The CCGA Cash Advance under the federal Advance Payments Program (APP) provides Canadian farmers with short-term working capital financing of up to $1,000,000 to support farm cash flow and marketing flexibility. Eligible activities include financing 50+ commodities (field crops, livestock, organic commodities, and honey), with up to $250,000 interest-free on eligible commodities plus an additional $250,000 interest-free for canola, and the remaining portion available at prime less 0.25%.

Activities funded

  • Obtain a short-term cash advance (working capital financing) secured against eligible agricultural products you will produce or have in storage.
  • Access pre-harvest advances (before seeding or in production) on eligible storable crops and honey production.
  • Access post-harvest advances on eligible crops held in storage and on actual honey production.
  • Access livestock advances on eligible live animals intended to be marketed during the production period (including continuous flow livestock advances where applicable).
  • Use the advance to support farm cash flow and marketing decisions by selling commodities based on market conditions rather than immediate cash needs.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be an agricultural producer (individual, partnership, corporation, cooperative) producing eligible agricultural products.
  • The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident and have reached the age of majority in the province where they farm.
  • The agricultural products on which the advance is requested must be eligible under the Advance Payments Program (APP) and/or CCGA’s program offering (50+ commodities, including crops, honey, and livestock).
  • The applicant must own the agricultural product being applied for; for a livestock advance, the stock must already be at foot.
  • The advance must be secured by the agricultural product and, where applicable, additional security such as proceeds from an eligible business risk management program (e.g., AgriInsurance, AgriStability, or Farm Income Stabilization Insurance in Quebec) and/or another acceptable form of security.

  • Operations applying for an advance on breeding animals that are not intended for market during the production period.
  • Applicants who are insolvent, bankrupt, or who have filed a notice of intention to make a proposal or made a proposal under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, or who are seeking protection under other insolvency or bankruptcy-related statutes (for example, Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act and the Farm Debt Mediation Act).

Additional information

  • The program is administered by the Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) under the federal Advance Payments Program (APP), a federal loan guarantee program.
  • Eligible advances are calculated using AAFC-established advance rates that are intended to reflect up to 50% of anticipated market value and may change during the applicable production period.
  • Applicants may have more than one advance outstanding (including more than one interest-free advance), but cannot have more than $1,000,000 outstanding at any one time.
  • Application processing can normally be completed within two weeks, but timelines may vary by APP Administrator.
