Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Applicants who hold or expect to hold a doctorate or health professional degree before the award start date.
  • International applicants who, as of the application deadline, are currently enrolled in or have completed a doctorate or health professional degree at a Canadian institution, or are conducting postdoctoral research at a Canadian institution.

Who is not eligible

  • Students applying to complete a degree or related internship, including health professionals in that context.
  • Applicants who hold or are on leave from a tenure-track or tenured faculty position.
  • Applicants who have already received a postdoctoral-level award from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC, including a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship.
  • Applicants who want to hold a CPRA concurrently with another tri-agency research training award.
  • Applicants who have already applied to the CPRA three times.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Projects whose primary objective is to adapt a doctoral thesis for publication in a book or manuscript.
  • Projects whose primary objective is to edit textbooks.
  • Projects whose primary objective is to translate or acquire a foreign language.

Selection criteria

  • Research potential and experience - 50%
  • Quality of proposed research program - 50%

How to apply

  • Select the agency whose research mandate most closely aligns with the research subject matter in your application.
  • Consult the relevant agency resources if you need help choosing the appropriate agency.
  • Complete and submit the application electronically through the appropriate agency platform: ResearchNET for CIHR, Online system for NSERC, or Registration and login for SSHRC.
  • All referees, references, institutional nominators and similar participants must use the appropriate online application system to submit supporting letters before the deadline.
  • Your application must be complete to be considered and must be submitted by the deadline.

Processing and Agreement

  • You will be notified of the results by March 31.
  • If you accept an award, the relevant agency will publish your name and other basic award information on its website.
  • Award holders must comply with the policies and guidelines in the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide and related application and award documents.
  • Award holders may be eligible to hold their awards part time.

Additional information

  • Awards may be reserved to support federal or agency-specific research priority areas.
  • Self-identification data and consent provided with applications may be used to determine eligibility for additional awards or priority funding opportunities designated for specific underrepresented groups.
