Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Canadian institutions eligible to receive CFI funding
  • Institutions that have accepted at least one Canada Impact+ Research Chair award

Who is not eligible

  • Institutions that are not eligible to receive CFI funding
  • Institutions that have not accepted at least one Canada Impact+ Research Chair award
  • Individuals applying directly

Eligible expenses

  • Research infrastructure acquisition or development
  • Operating and maintenance costs supporting the infrastructure
  • Eligible infrastructure expenditures and in-kind contributions incurred on or after April 1, 2026
  • Costs normally eligible under the Infrastructure Operating Fund, when used for O&M under this program

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Projects focused predominantly on major, collective, shared advanced research computing infrastructure.

Selection criteria

  • Need for the requested infrastructure and operating and maintenance support.
  • Ability of the project to complement existing institutional capacity.
  • Support for the chairholder’s research program and strategic priority area.
  • Support for the Emerging Leader’s research program, if applicable.

How to apply

  • Step 1: Prepare the proposal
    • Review the call for proposals and supporting instructions.
    • Prepare the proposal in the CFI Awards Management System (CAMS).
  • Step 2: Submit to the CFI
    • Institutions submit their proposal in CAMS.
    • The proposal must be submitted within three months of accepting the award.
  • Step 3: Await review
    • The proposal is reviewed and considered by the CFI Board of Directors.

Processing and Agreement

  • Proposals are reviewed by a multidisciplinary committee with relevant expertise.
  • The committee makes funding recommendations to the CFI Board of Directors.
  • The Board of Directors makes the final funding decision.
  • Institutions are notified by email when decisions and review materials are available in CAMS.

Additional information

  • Institutions must keep their CFI institutional agreement up to date.
  • Research security requirements apply at the time of application.
  • Projects may involve advanced research computing, but not as a mainly shared national platform.
  • Public announcement may follow funding decisions.
