Who is eligible?

  • Canadian degree-granting universities
  • Institutions recruiting internationally based researchers
  • Institutions recruiting early career researchers for Emerging Leaders awards

Who is not eligible

  • Researchers applying directly on their own
  • Institutions that are not eligible Canadian degree-granting universities
  • Nominees based in Canada at the time of application

Eligible expenses

  • Chairholder compensation.
  • Research activities for the chairholder and research team.
  • Indirect costs of research up to 25% of direct research costs.
  • Eligible recruitment and relocation costs.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Indirect costs above 25% of direct research costs.
  • Chairholder salary used in indirect cost calculations.
  • Chairholder teaching replacement costs used in indirect cost calculations.
  • Recruitment and relocation costs that are not eligible under the program.

How to apply

  • Step 1: Recruit and nominate
    • Conduct an open and accountable recruitment process.
    • Identify the nominee and prepare the nomination package.
  • Step 2: Register in Convergence Portal
    • Create the registration in the Convergence Portal.
    • Invite the nominee to accept and complete their profile.
    • Complete all required registration modules and submit by the deadline.
  • Step 3: Submit the full application
    • Complete the full application in the Convergence Portal.
    • Submit the application electronically by the deadline.
  • Step 4: Finalize submission
    • The senior official reviews the attestation and accepts the terms and conditions.
    • The registration status changes to “Received by Agency.”

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed by a multidisciplinary selection committee.
  • Funding recommendations are made based on ranking and available budget.
  • The TIPS Steering Committee ratifies the recommendations.
  • Institutions and nominees receive results through the Convergence Portal.
  • Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions to finalize the registration.

Additional information

  • Institutions may request CFI infrastructure support separately.
  • Applications are reviewed through a multidisciplinary selection process.
  • Competition results are communicated through the Convergence Portal.
  • Annual reporting and accountability requirements apply.
