Instructions for submitting an application using the Convergence Portal

Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Eligible Canadian institutions

Who is not eligible

  • Researchers applying directly without a Canadian institution

Eligible expenses

  • Compensation, including the chairholder’s salary
  • Research activities for the chairholder and the chairholder’s team
  • Eligible recruitment and relocation costs
  • Indirect costs of research, up to 25% of the direct costs of research

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Personal profit for team members
  • Consulting fees to the chairholder or independent researchers
  • Expenses that are not directly tied to the funded research

Selection criteria

  • Research record and leadership of the nominee
  • Quality of institutional support
  • Quality and originality of the research program
  • Potential contribution to Canadian and international research ecosystems
  • Potential for knowledge transfer, mobilization, and application

How to apply

  • Senior officials create registrations in the Research Administrator dashboard in the Convergence Portal.
  • The nominating institution must invite the nominee so they can access the registration and complete their profile.
  • The nominating institution must create and submit separate registrations and separate applications for each nomination.
  • Submit the registration and full application using the Convergence Portal by the specific deadline for each intake.
  • No changes can be made after the application deadlines, no applications will be accepted after each intake deadline, and no extensions will be provided.

Processing and Agreement

  • TIPS will undertake an administrative review of all materials to ensure submissions meet the program’s eligibility requirements and application guidelines.
  • Failure to meet the requirements and guidelines may result in the application being withdrawn from the competition.
  • The Multidisciplinary Selection Committee will carry out a rigorous, competitive, single-phase review process.
  • The committee will make funding recommendations to the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat Steering Committee based on the selection criteria and the available budget.
  • TIPS may request documentation within 48 months of submission to demonstrate that the recruitment requirements were followed, and may withdraw a nomination, suspend future payments, or terminate an already active Impact+ Research Chair or Emerging Leaders award if the requirements were not followed.

Additional information

  • Nominating institutions and nominees may submit documents and information in English or French.
  • Where possible, accompanying documents should be in the same language as the application.
  • An additional 20% of space has been allocated to page limits for documents submitted in French.
  • All individuals taking part in preparing the registration or application must have a Convergence Portal account, and the portal is supported only on the latest versions of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox.
