Who is eligible?

- Costs to conserve or restore exterior heritage features such as doors, windows, verandas, cupolas, chimneys, bargeboard, fences, and outbuildings if specifically referred to in the designation bylaw.
- Costs for exterior painting in documented original colours and for conservation or restoration of original siding, roofing, stained glass, stucco, and eavestroughing where eligible.
- Costs for structural work needed to restore the building to structural soundness.
- Costs for interior conservation of features specifically referred to in the designation bylaw, including woodwork, plaster work, and wall or ceiling murals.
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Short-term routine maintenance, including minor repairs such as repairing a broken step or a broken window, painting other than as specified, repair of non-original siding or roofing materials, and landscaping.
- Work on modern additions; sheds or outbuildings not specifically referred to in the designation bylaw; modern doors and windows unless they are replicas of the original in like materials; new storm or screen doors and windows; chimney repairs other than the restoration of a significant chimney; and repair of eavestrough unless it is significant to the heritage of the structure.
- Repairs to or renewal of modern materials, including standard asphalt shingle, built-up roofing, and other modern readily available roofing types.
- Sandblasting.
- New electrical, plumbing, heating and insulation work, and storm windows made of lexan, plexiglass, aluminum or extruded metal.
How to apply
- Meet with City heritage staff to review all your documents before you submit your formal application.
- Email heritage@burlington.ca to set up a meeting for review.
- Submit your application at least two weeks before the Heritage Burlington Advisory Committee meeting.
- Check the events calendar for upcoming Heritage Burlington Advisory Committee meetings.
Processing and Agreement
- City staff will include a summary of your application in the Heritage Burlington Advisory Committee monthly meeting agenda.
- City staff and the Heritage Burlington Advisory Committee will review the application.
- Loans require City of Burlington Council approval.
- We will send you the results in writing, and your application may be approved, approved with conditions, or denied.
- Once your project is approved, you must enter into a Conservation Agreement with the City, and a lien will be registered on your property and securities may be required for loans.
