Selection criteria

How to apply

  • Step 1: Prepare application materials
    • Write a letter of intent.
    • Prepare an artist statement or concept description.
    • Gather your resume or CV, concept images, work samples, fabrication and installation approach, and budget breakdown.
  • Step 2: Assemble the proposal
    • Combine all required materials into a single PDF document.
    • Include the required materials for each team member if applying as a team.
  • Step 3: Submit by email
    • Email the application to Liza Mishko at liza.mishko@barrie.ca.
    • Use the subject line: Brightening Barriers 2026 (name of applicant).
    • Submit before the deadline.

Processing and Agreement

  • All eligible submissions are reviewed by the selection committee.
  • Applications are assessed on artistic merit, response to theme, and project feasibility.
  • Selected artists are notified and agreements are executed with the City of Barrie.
  • Selected artists enter into a contract covering responsibilities, timelines, budget, and installation terms.

Additional information

  • Artists selected for the program receive a contract with the City of Barrie.
  • Up to three applicants may receive mentorship support from experienced local artists.
  • The City will pair selected artists with a downtown patio after selection.
  • The exhibition is organized by the Barrie Public Art Committee.
