OPERATING ASSISTANCE: BOOK PUBLISHERS Program Guidelines 2022/23

Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Professional book publishers
  • B.C.-based Canadian-owned book publishers
  • Indigenous-led book publishers in B.C.
  • Book publishers operated by accredited post-secondary institutions in B.C.

Who is not eligible

  • New applicants in 2025/26
  • Publishers without established operations in B.C.
  • Publishers lacking editorial independence
  • Self-published or non-trade book publishers

Eligible expenses

  • General operating costs of the publisher

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Budget deficits
  • Capital expenditures, including construction, renovation, property purchase, or equipment
  • Start-up costs or seed money
  • Self-published books and other excluded book genres or formats

Eligible geographic areas

  • British Columbia

  • Reconciliation, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access
  • Artistic and cultural contribution, engagement, and impact
  • Organizational capacity and governance

How to apply

  • Step 1: Review program requirements
    • Confirm the current guidelines and eligibility requirements.
    • Contact a program advisor if needed before applying.
  • Step 2: Prepare the application
    • Update the organizational profile and required support materials.
    • Complete the statement of intent and required application information.
  • Step 3: Submit through the online system
    • Submit the application through the Grant Management System.
    • New applicants must first register and create a profile.
  • Step 4: Wait for the decision
    • Results are sent through the online system and by email.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed first for eligibility
  • Eligible applications are assessed by a peer panel
  • Funding decisions are approved and communicated in writing
  • Decisions are normally issued within 16 weeks of the deadline
  • Payments may be delayed, redistributed, or suspended if obligations are not met
