Who is eligible?

• Property owners, corporations, individuals, or partnerships
• Businesses located in the Barton Street East and Kenilworth Avenue North commercial corridors
• Owners of existing commercial, mixed-use, multi-residential, or institutional buildings

Who is not eligible

• Properties outside the Barton Street East and Kenilworth Avenue North commercial corridors
• Projects that do not involve an existing eligible building type
• Applicants whose work does not comply with required design guidelines, where applicable

Eligible expenses

• Construction and renovation work for approved building improvements
• Exterior façade and building repair work
• Upgrades to windows, doors, awnings, signage, lighting, and similar property improvements

Ineligible Costs and Activities

• Work that has started before approval of required changes or permits
• Improvements that do not comply with the program’s design guidelines, where applicable
• Grant payments before required taxes, orders, or violations are cleared

• Hamilton, Ontario
• Barton Street East commercial corridor
• Kenilworth Avenue North commercial corridor

• Fit with the program’s goals for revitalization and property improvement
• Marketability and business vitality impact of the proposed work
• Use of under-utilized upper floors, where relevant
• Compliance with zoning, heritage, tax, and property standards requirements

• Step 1: Complete the application
  • Download the application form and fill it out.
  • Prepare the required supporting documents and estimates.
• Step 2: Submit the application
  • Email the completed application form to the City of Hamilton contact listed in the program materials.
• Step 3: Review and approval
  • Wait for City staff to review the application and complete due diligence checks.
  • If approved, sign the Letter of Understanding before funding is disbursed.

• Applications are reviewed by City staff as part of due diligence checks.
• Staff verify zoning, tax status, heritage status, and compliance issues.
• If approved, a Letter of Understanding is issued before any funding is disbursed.
• Final payment is released only after proof that the approved work is completed and fully paid.

• A detailed Letter of Understanding is signed before funding is disbursed.
• Applications for buildings with occupied rental units may trigger tenant notification.
• Work may require permits, licences, or approvals before starting.
• Property taxes and certain code or standards issues must be resolved before grant funds are advanced.
