Employer health tax overview

Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • All employers, including employers who did not have to pay the employer health tax
  • Employers may be individuals, corporations, partnerships or trusts

Who is not eligible

  • Public institutions
  • Registered political parties

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Employer-paid contributions or premiums to registered pension plans, private health services plans, supplementary unemployment benefit plans, deferred profit sharing plans, or retirement compensation arrangements
  • Pensions, annuities or superannuation benefits paid to retired employees
  • Retiring allowances and severances
  • Stock option benefits and wages in lieu of termination notice
  • Death benefits, dividend income, and employer contributions to a plan or trust if the contribution value had already been included as remuneration

Processing and Agreement

  • Associated employers had to enter into an agreement to decide which employer would claim the eligible remuneration for an employee employed by more than one associated employer.
