How to apply for AISH and ADAP

Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • People with a severe disability that is a substantial impairment of mental or physical functioning that permanently prevents employment.
  • People with a severe disability that is permanent, for which all relevant treatment that could lessen the impairment has been completed, and in which no improvement is expected.
  • People who are at least 18 years old and not eligible to receive an Old Age Security pension.
  • People who live in Alberta and are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
  • People who meet the financial eligibility criteria.

Who is not eligible

  • People in a correctional facility or some mental health facilities such as Alberta Hospital Edmonton

Eligible expenses

  • Living costs such as food, rent and utilities
  • Raising your dependent children
  • Health needs for you, your spouse or partner and your dependent children
  • A special diet or assistance in an emergency

Selection criteria

  • Disability Income Assistance applications are reviewed in the order they are received.
  • Applicants receiving end-of-life palliative care and/or diagnosed with a terminal illness are prioritized.

How to apply

  • Sign in via Alberta.ca to continue or view your DIA application.
  • Create an application to apply or reapply for DIA, or find out if DIA is right for you.

Processing and Agreement

  • The AISH program must issue written notification(s) to the client advising that they have the right to provide additional information to AISH that may impact the calculation of the potential overpayment, within 30 days of receiving Letter EMP12201.
  • The AISH program must issue written notification(s) to the client advising of the director (or delegate) decisions to confirm the assessed overpayment, to require full repayment of the amount owing, and of the client’s right to appeal each decision to the AISH Appeal Panel within 30 days of receiving Letter EMP12210.

Additional information

  • If you receive AISH, you must inform the AISH program of the approval or denial of your Canada Disability Benefit and/or Disability Tax Credit application.
  • You are responsible for reporting any changes in your situation to an AISH or ADAP worker as soon as possible.
