Overview
The program offers a $50,000 CAD stipend for a year-long Artist-in-Residence at the University of Toronto’s School of Cities. It supports an early-career artist to research, collaborate, and create work engaging urban issues such as housing, climate change, civic engagement, migration, and social justice, culminating in a public exhibition.
Activities funded
- Collaborate with the School of Cities to research and create art engaging urban issues.
- Propose and lead programs, events, and activities within the School of Cities community.
- Contribute to School of Cities publications and knowledge products.
- Participate in School of Cities events (roundtables, seminars, symposia).
- Deliver a final public exhibition showcasing the residency research/artwork.

Selection criteria
- Alignment of the project with the School of Cities’ mission and with key urban issues (e.g., civic and community engagement, housing, climate change, social justice, migration, inequality, democracy).
- Relevance and clarity of the proposal: ability to explain why the applicant is an ideal candidate and to present a coherent project focus.
- Quality and relevance of the portfolio, with a significant emphasis on urban themes.
- Demonstrated leadership potential (leadership capacity and potential).
- Demonstrated experience and commitment in community engagement.

- Identify two referees and collect their names and contact information
- Ensure referees are former/current employers, curators, supervisors, or community leaders you worked with in the past 5 years

- Convert and compile all required documents into PDF format
- Confirm uploads meet the requested format (.pdf)

Complete the online form
- Complete the ECCUL Artist-in-Residence application form online
- Upload all required PDF documents

Submit by the deadline
- Submit the application electronically by 5 PM ET on January 25, 2025

Follow up with referees
- After submission, ensure your referees complete the reference form sent to them by the School of Cities
Additional information
- Residency culminates in a final public exhibition showcasing research/artwork produced during the year.
- Participants may receive mentorship from Canadian Urban Leaders and Urbanists-in-Residence.
