Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Mid-career researchers
  • Researchers based in academic institutions
  • Researchers based in non-academic institutions, including health authorities and hospital research institutes

Who is not eligible

  • Decision-makers from federal departments, including PHAC
  • Current Canada Research Chair holders whose CRC award has not ended by the decision date

Eligible expenses

  • Salary contribution, including fringe benefits
  • Research, mentorship, capacity-building, and knowledge translation activities
  • Annual APHC meeting planning, delivery, and hosting
  • Knowledge translation allowance

Selection criteria

  • Relevance of the proposal to the General Pool and, if applicable, selected research areas
  • Quality of the proposal and knowledge translation plan
  • Quality of existing partnerships and collaborations with knowledge users
  • Potential impact and alignment with program objectives
  • Combined reviewer score across the five criteria at full application stage

How to apply

  • Step 1: Prepare the Letter of Intent
    • Describe how the proposal addresses the objectives and research areas of the initiative.
    • Provide any optional letters of support if available.
  • Step 2: Submit the Letter of Intent
    • Submit the LOI through the application system.
    • The LOI will be reviewed for eligibility and relevance only.
  • Step 3: Submit the Full Application if invited
    • Complete the full application after invitation.
    • Identify the decision maker at the full application stage.
    • Include the required institutional confirmation and supporting documentation.
  • Step 4: Await the final review decision
    • The full application is assessed against the program’s evaluation criteria.
    • Applicants are notified of the outcome after review.

Processing and Agreement

  • Letter of Intent submissions are reviewed for eligibility and relevance only.
  • Relevant LOIs are invited to submit a full application.
  • Full applications are assessed against all five evaluation criteria.
  • There is no weight attached to each criterion; reviewers provide one overall score.

Additional information

  • Letters of support are not mandatory at the Letter of Intent stage, but they are encouraged.
  • No co-applicants are required for this application.
  • Applicants may submit to the General Pool only, or to the General Pool plus up to two research areas.
  • Current Canada Research Chair holders are only eligible if their CRC award has ended by the Full Application Notice of Decision date.
