- Initiatives aligned with AWFC’s strategic direction that improve the welfare of animals kept by people (research, education, agriculture, companionship).
- Projects aimed at reducing harms to wildlife caused by human activity.

Eligibility
- The applicant must be a registered Canadian charity or non-profit organization.
- The proposed project must align with the Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada’s strategic direction and vision for animal care and respect.

- Animal Welfare Organizations (AWOs) that are registered Canadian charities
- Animal Welfare Organizations (AWOs) that are Canadian non-profit organizations

- Organizations that are not registered Canadian charities or non-profits

Selection criteria
- Alignment with AWFC’s strategic direction.
- National impact, or ability for local/regional outcomes to be shared or duplicated nationally.
- Significant impact, especially where donor funding may be difficult to attract.
How to apply
Step 1: Submit project eligibility proposal
- Submit the Project Eligibility Proposal by the stated deadline (September 30, 2026).
- Wait for notification by mid-October on whether your proposal is short-listed.
- Use the application form emailed by AWFC.
- Submit the full proposal by November 15.
- Receive the Board’s decision by the end of December.
- If approved, receive the cheque by mail in January of the new year.
Processing and Agreement
- Applicants are notified by mid-October whether they are short-listed.
- Short-listed applicants are invited to submit a full proposal by November 15.
- The application form is emailed to short-listed applicants.
- Applicants are notified of the Board’s funding decision by the end of December.
- Cheques are mailed in January of the new year.
Additional information
- Preference is given to projects with national impact or that can be shared/replicated nationally.
- Preference may be given to high-impact projects that have difficulty attracting donor funding.
- Short-listed applicants are invited to submit a full proposal by November 15.
- Applicants are notified of Board funding decisions by the end of December, with cheques mailed in January.
