Who is eligible?
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons.
- Alberta residents.
- Students enrolled in a full course load in a designated undergraduate post-secondary program.
- Apprenticeship students in a program of at least one semester in length.
- Eligible students who complete high school outside Alberta.
Who is not eligible
- Visa students.
- Applicants using a temporary Social Insurance Number (999 xxx xxx).
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Graduate level studies.
- Professional programs such as medicine, veterinary medicine, optometry, and similar programs.

Selection criteria
- A minimum combined average based on five designated courses in at least one grade is required.
- English or Français at each grade level is a mandatory core requirement and must be included in the average calculation.
- Only marks obtained before the start of post-secondary study can be used.
- Average marks are not rounded up when calculating eligibility.
- A course cannot be repeated after a higher-level course has been taken in the same series.

- Step 1: Prepare account and information
- Create or use a verified Alberta.ca account
- Have your SIN, Alberta Student Number, school information, and transcript marks ready
- Step 2: Submit the online application
- Log in to your Alberta Student Aid account
- Select the Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship in the Apply section
- Step 3: Provide supporting documents if needed
- Upload transcripts or mark-change documents when required
- Submit a Scholarship Residency History form if you completed high school outside Alberta
Processing and Agreement
- Application is reviewed after submission and marks are assessed
- Applicants are notified in writing of the result
- If eligible, enrolment is confirmed with the post-secondary institution
- A cheque is mailed after enrolment confirmation
Additional information
- This scholarship is funded through the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund.
- Students will automatically be considered for the Rutherford Scholar Award, Dr. Ernest and Minnie Mehl Scholarship, and Mildred Rowe Weston Memorial Scholarship when they apply for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship; there is no separate application required for these awards.
- You may only be awarded the Alexander Rutherford scholarship once.
