Overview
The Alberta Innovates LevMax-Health program provides up to $750,000 in funding over 36 months to support health research and innovation projects led by Alberta-based post-secondary institutions. Eligible activities include overcoming health research barriers, developing and commercializing personalized health innovations, and early-stage implementation of innovative health care models.

Eligibility
- The applicant must be an Alberta-based post-secondary institution.
- The project must align with the objectives of the LevMax-Health Program and fit within one of the supported project types (Research or Health System Transformation).
- The nominated principal applicant must be based in Alberta.
- The project must have previously received written scores and peer review comments from a Tri-agency competition (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, or CIHR Institutes) within the specified competition period but was not funded.
- The applicant must be authorized to execute a grant with Alberta Innovates and be in good financial standing with Alberta Innovates and its subsidiaries.

Who is not eligible
- Individual scholarship or fellowship applications submitted by graduate students or postdoctoral fellows.
- Organizations that are not Alberta-based post-secondary academic institutions.
- Applicants who are prohibited from receiving Alberta Innovates funding due to past bad debt or not being in good financial standing with Alberta Innovates or its subsidiaries.
Eligible expenses
- Project expenses included in the original Tri-agency application budget, subject to Alberta Innovates' guidelines and deemed reasonable and necessary for project execution.
- Costs incurred only after the signing of the Investment Agreement between Alberta Innovates and the applicant.
- Only expenditures at or below market rates and arising from transactions between arm’s-length parties.

Selection criteria
- Alignment of the project with the LevMax-Health program objectives and intended outcomes.
- Fit with one of the supported project types and priority areas (Research or Health System Transformation).
- Quality of application materials, including the original Tri-agency application and reviewer feedback.
- Achievement of key measurable milestones and deliverables, with well-defined go/no-go decision points.
How to apply
- Step 1: Review Program Guide
- Thoroughly review the LevMax-Health Program Guide available on the program's website to understand application requirements and eligible expenses.
- Step 2: Prepare Application Documents
- Compile the original Tri-agency funding application (NSERC, SSHRC, or CIHR) submitted between the specified dates.
- Gather all written reviewer comments and scores received from the Tri-agency competition.
- Obtain the letter of decision issued by the Tri-agency organization confirming non-funding status.
- Step 3: Access Online Application Portal
- Visit the SmartSimple online application portal as specified by Alberta Innovates.
- Step 4: Complete and Submit Application
- Complete the online application form in the SmartSimple portal.
- Upload the original Tri-agency application, reviewer comments, scores, and letter of decision as supporting documentation.
- Submit the full application through the portal before the application deadline (August 29, 2025, 4:00 pm MST).
- Step 5: Await Evaluation
- All applications will undergo internal and potentially external review to assess their alignment with the program objectives and outcomes.
- Step 6: Post-Submission Requirements
- If approved for funding, sign the Alberta Innovates standard-form Investment Agreement before any disbursement.
Additional information
- Applicants can only hold one active LevMax-Health grant at any given time.
- Performance monitoring may continue for up to five years after the project’s completion.
- Alberta Innovates funds projects on a milestone completion basis, requiring satisfactory progress reporting for each payment.
- Priority is given to digital or data-enabled projects and those aligned with a One Health approach.
