Who is eligible?

  • Commercial vegetable producers.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Losses resulting from negligence or misconduct of the insured, their agents, employees, or contractors.
  • Losses from insect infestation or plant disease unless Department-recommended control measures were followed to the Commission's satisfaction.
  • Losses from flooding when the land was declared by the Commission to be in a flood plain before the application was accepted.
  • Losses caused by shortage of labour or machinery, or by the use of poor quality or diseased seed or transplants.
  • Losses caused by a peril other than those listed in section 2, by crops planted or harvested after the final dates, or by immaturity not directly resulting from an insured peril.

How to apply

  • Submit the insurance application with the initial premium payment, or pay it on or before the first day of May of the crop year.
  • Complete and file the insured acreage report on the form provided by the Commission by July 15 of the crop year.
  • Attach maps showing the location, acreage, and planting dates of eligible fresh market vegetable crops to the insured acreage report, or send them to the Commission within one week of planting if the crops are planted after the report is filed.

Processing and Agreement

  • The Commission reviews the loss and sends the insured a written decision to pay or refuse indemnity.
  • If the insured does not agree with the decision, they may file a Notice of Dispute.
  • The Commission reviews the dispute, carries out any further investigations it considers necessary or advisable, and issues a final written decision.
  • No indemnity is paid until a Proof of Loss has been filed with the Commission.
  • An indemnity becomes due and payable within 30 calendar days of acceptance of the offer of payment by the insured or within 30 calendar days of a ruling by the Arbitrator.
