Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Public and private institutions such as colleges, universities, hospitals, and laboratories.
  • State and local government units and eligible federal agencies.
  • Network organizations focused on imaging collaboration.

  • For-profit organizations.
  • Meta employees and employees of Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, LLC.

Eligible expenses

  • Personnel salaries for the imaging scientist and project support staff.
  • Subcontracting for specialized creative or event work.
  • Travel and lodging.
  • Online project development, hosting, and management costs.
  • Parts, shipping, publicity, and promotion for funded projects.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Capital equipment as a basis for indirect costs.
  • Subcontract costs charged with indirect costs above the allowed limit.
  • Travel expenses to the United States for international grantees.

Eligible geographic areas

  • Any country, subject to U.S. sanctions and export control compliance.
  • International grantees must conduct funded activities outside the United States.

How to apply

  • Step 1: Register in the portal
    • Create an account on CZI’s online grants portal.
    • Verify the account through the confirmation email.
  • Step 2: Complete the application tasks
    • Fill in the required sections for the Coordinating PI, organization, project details, proposal, budget, CVs, and letters of commitment.
    • Upload the Institutional Approval Form and other required PDFs.
  • Step 3: Review and submit
    • Mark each task as complete.
    • Review the full application before submission.
    • Submit through the portal before the deadline.
  • Step 4: Confirm submission
    • Check for the automatic confirmation email.
    • Contact the program team if submission was made in error before the deadline.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed through independent expert review.
  • Final funding decisions are made by CZI staff with scientific advisors.
  • Applicants are notified starting in January 2023, subject to change.
  • A funding award and compliance with CZI policies are required before support begins.
  • Awarded projects must submit annual financial statements and progress reports.

  • Deadline extensions will not be granted.
  • Applications selected may be funded by CZIF or recommended through CZI DAF.
