Who is eligible?

  • Canadian postsecondary institutions and affiliated institutions
  • Hospitals and research institutes
  • Non-profit organizations with a health research or knowledge mobilization mandate
  • Indigenous non-governmental organizations in Canada with a research or knowledge mobilization mandate

Who is not eligible

  • Organizations that are not based in Canada for the required role
  • Entities without a research or knowledge mobilization mandate where one is required
  • Applicants submitting more than one application as Nominated Principal Applicant

  • Salaries for grant team members
  • Space rental in non-academic institutions
  • Compensation for knowledge users and patients
  • Accessibility supports
  • Translation and preparation of public-facing materials

  • Research approach and feasibility of co-produced activities.
  • Strength and experience of the applicant team.
  • Community or organizational buy-in and commitment.
  • Quality of governance, co-leadership, and conflict resolution plans.
  • Expected impact, usefulness, and contribution to knowledge mobilization.

How to apply

  • Step 1: Prepare the full application
    • Follow the specific instructions in ResearchNet.
    • Use the tri-agency CV format for required participants.
    • Complete the proposal, summary, budget information, and required attachments.
  • Step 2: Complete required tasks in ResearchNet
    • Identify participants.
    • Enter the research proposal information and relevance statement.
    • Attach the governance plan, participant table, and other required materials.
    • Complete the application partner information if applicable.
  • Step 3: Upload signatures and submit
    • Upload signed signature pages and routing slip.
    • Review the application before submission.
    • Submit through ResearchNet by the deadline.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications undergo relevance review against the program objectives and selected research area.
  • Eligible applications are then peer reviewed by researchers and knowledge users and/or Knowledge Holders.
  • Applications are ranked within each funding pool.
  • Funding decisions are made from the top of each ranked pool.
  • Successful applicants are published on the CIHR website.

  • A Partner Linkage Tool is available, but it is not mandatory.
  • Applicants may use the tri-agency CV for this opportunity.
  • Successful teams may be invited to a virtual workshop.
  • Final reporting includes a short plain-language brief and an electronic final report.
