Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Winnipeg Art Gallery Foundation

The Winnipeg Art Gallery Foundation is a separate, fully accredited charitable foundation created to provide long-term financial support for the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG). Incorporated in 1978, it operates with its own board of trustees and governance structure, ensuring that donated funds are professionally managed and directed toward the artistic and institutional priorities of the Gallery.

The Foundation’s income is generated from general gifts and donations, bequests, grants, transfers of property, planned giving, and insurance-based gifts. By pooling and investing these resources in an endowment, the Foundation is able to provide stable, ongoing financial support for the WAG, complementing public funding and earned revenues.

Over the years, the Winnipeg Art Gallery Foundation has contributed nearly $2 million to the Gallery. These funds have been used to expand the permanent collection, sponsor exhibitions, and back key capital projects. In practice, this means the Foundation helps finance acquisitions of artworks, supports the presentation of exhibitions to the public, and contributes to building campaigns and infrastructure improvements for WAG-Qaumajuq.

Although the Foundation does not operate open-call grant programs for the general public, it functions as a dedicated funding body for the Winnipeg Art Gallery, channeling philanthropic support into curated projects and institutional initiatives that benefit artists, audiences, and the wider cultural community in Manitoba.

The organization actively encourages endowed gifts and other forms of planned giving. Donors are invited to contribute to the endowment, enabling their support to generate income in perpetuity.
