Grant and Funding Programs Offered by West Nipissing General Hospital Foundation

The West Nipissing General Hospital Foundation is the charitable arm of West Nipissing General Hospital in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario. Its primary role is to raise and steward philanthropic funds that are then donated to the hospital to purchase life‑saving medical equipment, renovate care spaces, and support essential patient services. Although it does not run open grant competitions for external organizations, it functions as a dedicated funding body for the hospital’s capital and equipment priorities.

Annual reports show that the Foundation regularly commits substantial amounts to the hospital. Recent examples include a $60,000 commitment for indispensable equipment, an $80,000 package of equipment purchases across several units, and earlier a $100,000 donation to launch the CT scanner campaign. Foundation support has financed items such as patient lifts with scales, trauma stretchers, monitors and defibrillators, wound‑care mattresses, oncology treatment chairs, ice machines and blanket warmers.

The Foundation’s funding benefits a wide range of patients served by West Nipissing General Hospital, including emergency and surgical patients, long‑term care residents, oncology and palliative care clients, and those requiring diagnostic imaging such as CT scans. By investing in up‑to‑date equipment and improved spaces, the Foundation helps reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region for care and improves comfort and safety for patients, families and staff.

Funding decisions are overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors that works closely with hospital leadership. The Foundation reports annually to its community of donors, highlighting projects completed and equipment purchased, and emphasizing transparency, integrity and social accountability.

To generate the resources it grants to the hospital, the Foundation operates multiple fundraising streams: monthly 50/50 raffles, Run4Health community runs, Christmas tree raffles, breast cancer awareness campaigns, casino or gala events, bottle drives and other special initiatives. It also promotes memorial giving, monthly donations, grateful patient programs, legacy gifts and vehicle donations.

Its donor base includes individual residents, families, local businesses, municipalities and community groups. These partners collectively enable the Foundation to respond to emerging equipment needs and to undertake one‑time projects such as the renovation of the long‑term care dining room.
