Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Vancouver Public Library Foundation (VPLF)

The Vancouver Public Library Foundation (VPLF) is the philanthropic arm of Vancouver Public Library. Established in July 1997, it exists to secure and steward private donations that enhance, but do not replace, the public funding base of the library. The Foundation directs donor contributions to a portfolio of projects that strengthen library spaces, expand collections, and support innovative programs for people of all ages and abilities across Vancouver.

Through campaigns and endowed funds, VPLF helps finance capital projects such as the Central Children’s Library Revitalization and the renewal of key public areas at the Central Library. It also channels support to core services and collections, including print materials, e‑book and audiobook collections, youth digital resources, and specialized accessible services for seniors and patrons with disabilities. Dedicated funding streams sustain early literacy and family programs like Alligator Pie, Parent‑Child Mother Goose, Sensory Storytimes, Language Fun Storytimes, and initiatives for fathers and non‑binary caregivers.

The Foundation focuses its fundraising and grantmaking on three broad themes: VPL spaces, collections and services, and programs for children. Within these themes, it backs projects that improve physical and digital infrastructure, pilot new service models, and reduce barriers to participation. Beneficiaries include children and families, seniors, people living with disabilities, newcomers, and the wider community of more than two hundred thousand active cardholders.

City funding provides the library with a core operating base, while donor support managed by VPLF enables innovation, expansion, and responsiveness to emerging needs. By aggregating gifts from individuals, corporations, and estates, the Foundation effectively redistributes funds to priority initiatives identified in collaboration with library leadership.

VPLF emphasizes fiscal responsibility so that contributions can have maximum impact. A clearly articulated gift acceptance policy, audited financial statements, and an annual report provide transparency about how funds are received, invested, and deployed. Consistent with board policy, a portion of designated and restricted donations helps sustain the Foundation’s own operations, ensuring long‑term capacity to support the library’s mission.

Guided by a self‑elected board of directors and a small professional staff team working closely with Vancouver Public Library employees, the Foundation has grown since 1997 into a key partner in the city’s cultural and educational landscape. It continues to build a community of donors and advocates who believe that a well‑resourced public library is essential infrastructure for learning, inclusion, and civic life.
