Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Vancouver Island University Foundation

The Vancouver Island University Foundation is a registered charitable organization dedicated to advancing the mission of Vancouver Island University (VIU). Operating under its own constitution and bylaws, the Foundation manages endowed funds, receives donations, bequests and other gifts, and applies these resources to support VIU’s goals. Its mandate explicitly includes providing, by way of grants, loans or other means, financial assistance to the university and its students.

Working closely with VIU’s Office of Advancement and Alumni, the Foundation administers funds that underpin a wide range of scholarships, awards and bursaries, as well as flexible student assistance such as the VIU Access Fund. It also helps finance initiatives that enhance student experience, research capacity and community-focused programs across Vancouver Island and coastal British Columbia.

The Foundation channels donor contributions into several key areas. A major focus is student financial aid through merit-based scholarships, need-based bursaries and emergency or short-term support. The VIU Access Fund, for example, provides bursaries typically ranging from $500 to $2,000 to students facing unexpected financial hardship, and supports related initiatives like the Career Closet, Gear Closet, laptop loan programs and campus food pantries.

In addition to individual awards, the Foundation stewards endowed and current-use funds that can support program development, student success services and other university priorities. Campaigns such as “Ripples of Change” target multi‑year fundraising goals for scholarships, awards and bursaries, illustrating the Foundation’s role in building long‑term financial capacity for student support.

The primary beneficiaries of the Vancouver Island University Foundation are VIU students across all faculties, apprenticeship and trades programs, and regional campuses, including Nanaimo and Cowichan. By investing in learners who often face financial barriers to post‑secondary education, the Foundation contributes to the social and economic development of Vancouver Island and surrounding coastal communities.

The Foundation is incorporated under the British Columbia Societies Act and governed by an independent Board of Directors that includes VIU leadership and community representatives. Its bylaws define membership, director roles, committees, audit requirements and investment powers. The Board oversees the management and investment of trust and endowed funds and ensures that all assets are used exclusively for charitable purposes aligned with VIU’s objectives.

Audited financial statements are prepared annually, with an auditor appointed at the Foundation’s annual general meeting, and reporting is coordinated with Vancouver Island University. This governance framework helps ensure donor funds are managed prudently and directed to scholarships, bursaries, student support funds and institutional priorities in a transparent and accountable manner.
