Role of The PepsiCo Canada Foundation in the funding ecosystem
The PepsiCo Canada Foundation is a national registered charity established in 1989. It focuses on raising funds and channeling them as grants to Canadian registered charities and registered Amateur Athletic Associations. Its primary objective is to support activities, programs and educational initiatives that promote physical activity, healthy lifestyle habits, and broader health and wellness, with a strong emphasis on underprivileged children and youth across Canada.
Over more than three decades, the foundation has distributed in excess of three million dollars in grants. Funding is generated mainly through employee‑led fundraising events such as regional golf tournaments in Ontario, Quebec and Western Canada, as well as a concert event called Rock the Foundation. These events mobilize PepsiCo employees and corporate partners to support youth‑oriented community initiatives.
Supported audiences and sectors
The foundation funds organizations that work directly with young people, often in underserved communities. Typical recipients include youth clubs, municipal recreation programs, community centres, Indigenous and urban Indigenous organizations, and charities focused on sport and recreation, food security, school nutrition, and mental well‑being.
The 2025 Supporting Charities list highlights examples such as BeaYOUtiful’s confidence and mental wellness programs for girls and non‑binary youth, BGC Canada’s youth athletics and leadership programs in downtown Toronto, the City of Mississauga’s free Let’s Play in the Park program, KidSport Calgary’s support for minor sport participation, Kinvia’s school nutrition initiatives with Indigenous communities, Patro Roc‑Amadour’s community programming in Québec City, Right To Play’s work with Indigenous communities in British Columbia, and evening Teen Nights programming at YMCA centres in the Greater Toronto Area.
Grantmaking approach and employee involvement
The foundation’s grants are focused on concrete programs that increase access to sport, recreation, leadership development, and healthy living opportunities for children and youth who face financial or social barriers. In addition to core supported charities, the foundation operates an employee‑nominated charities stream, through which PepsiCo employees can champion local organizations. Lists of employee‑nominated charities are published annually and show support for a wide range of community‑based groups across provinces.
Governance is provided by a volunteer Board of Directors and Officers, with PepsiCo employees planning and delivering fundraising events. While the site does not present a formal open call for applications, it clearly positions the organization as a grantmaking foundation that redistributes funds to partner organizations nationwide.
