The Mercury Phoenix Trust (MPT) is a UK-registered AIDS charity established in memory of Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury. Working at the intersection of music legacy and global health, the Trust channels donated funds into HIV/AIDS initiatives around the world, with a strong emphasis on education and awareness in the developing world. Since the early 1990s it has funded well over 1,500 projects in 57 countries and granted more than £17–18 million to organisations fighting HIV/AIDS.

The MPT positions itself as a bridge between global fan-driven fundraising and small, community-based organisations that often sit below the radar of major donors. While it does donate to some large NGOs and well-known charities, the majority of its support goes directly to grassroots groups where relatively modest grants can have substantial impact.

By prioritising local organisations, the MPT seeks to address gaps left by governments and larger NGOs, especially in regions marked by poverty and limited access to health information. The Mercury Phoenix Trust operates programme-based grant funding. It only funds registered charities and explicitly does not provide grants to individuals or travel grants. Eligible applicants are organisations delivering HIV/AIDS-related work, particularly in the field of education and awareness in developing countries. To apply, charities must complete an application form and supply a detailed budget plus supporting governance and financial documents such as a registration certificate, audited accounts, constitution or memorandum and articles of association, and their latest annual report.

Successful grantees are required to report regularly: the MPT requests a six-monthly progress report, an end-of-project report and periodic updates with photos or video that can be shared on its website. This reporting framework underpins the Trust’s focus on accountability and impact.

Through its grants, the MPT indirectly supports a wide range of vulnerable populations: women and girls affected by the dual impact of HIV and broader crises such as Covid-19, children orphaned by AIDS, young people at risk of infection, and communities in low-resource settings. The Trust highlights that many of its partners work at the frontline of the epidemic in countries where stigma, lack of education and weak health systems still drive new infections.

The Mercury Phoenix Trust builds its funding base through a mix of individual donations, monthly giving, corporate sponsorships and themed events such as the annual Freddie Mercury Birthday Party and the global "Freddie For A Day" campaign. The organisation encourages creative fundraising by supporters and works with business partners to cover event costs so that net proceeds can be channelled directly to partner charities. It also promotes ongoing partnerships for regular monthly giving, illustrating how small recurring donations can sustain specific training, outreach or awareness activities in countries such as India, Madagascar, Uganda, Malawi and Tanzania.
